Spiritually
Relationally
Our relationships—whether in our families, friendships, marriages, or church community—shape who we are and how we reflect Christ to the world. Jesus Himself modeled this when He walked in close relationship with His disciples, showing us that love, accountability, and encouragement are essential to our spiritual growth.
This week I want to open up with why “Friends Matter.”
What Does It Mean to Have a Friend?
Having a friend is more than just knowing someone or spending time together—it’s about having a genuine, mutual relationship built on trust, love, and support.
1. A Friend is Someone Who Loves You Unconditionally
Proverbs 17:17 – "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.
2. A Friend is Someone Who Walks With You in Life
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 – "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up."
3. A Friend is Someone Who Sharpens and Challenges You
Proverbs 27:17 – "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."
They tell you the truth, even when it’s hard to hear.
They challenge you to be your best self.
4. A Friend is Someone You Can Trust
Proverbs 11:13 – "A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret."
They keep your secrets and respect your trust.
They don’t talk behind your back.
5. A Friend is Someone Who Forgives and Extends Grace
Colossians 3:13 – "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you."
They don’t hold grudges.
They are willing to work through misunderstandings.
I Believe Jesus teaches us a powerful lesson about friendships..
Jesus in (John 13-17) is preparing His disciples for His crucifixion and departure.
Summary of John 15:1-12:
Summary of John 15:1-12:
Jesus is the Vine; we must stay connected to Him.
Abiding in Him leads to fruitfulness; apart from Him, we can do nothing.
God prunes us for greater growth.
Abiding in Christ means obeying Him and living in His love.
True joy comes from staying in Christ and loving others.
The Greatest Love in Friendship
The Greatest Love in Friendship
John 15:13 (ESV)
"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."
The Highest Form of Love is Sacrificial
Jesus defines the ultimate expression of love and friendship as laying down one's life for another.
This foreshadows His own sacrifice on the cross, where He gives His life for humanity.
Friendship in Jesus' Terms Involves Selflessness
Obedient Friendship
Obedient Friendship
John 15:14 (ESV)
"You are my friends if you do what I command you."
Friendship with Jesus Requires Obedience
it might seem that Jesus is saying His friendship is conditional—that we must "earn" it by following His commands. However, when we look deeper, we see that Jesus’ friendship is freely offered, but it requires a response.
Obedience to Jesus is not about earning His love, but responding to it.
With Jesus, obedience is the sign of love and trust
(John 14:15 – "If you love me, you will keep my commandments.").
Not Just Anyone is a Friend of Jesus
This is an exclusive friendship in the sense that those who follow His teachings are the ones who truly experience intimacy with Him.
From Servants to Friends
From Servants to Friends
📖 John 15:15 (ESV)
"No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you."
A Shift in Relationship
In the Old Testament, God's people were often called His "servants" (Moses, David, prophets).
Now, Jesus elevates His disciples from mere servants to friends.
This doesn’t mean we stop serving Jesus—it means our relationship is based on intimacy, not just duty.
True Friendship with Jesus Involves Revelation
Unlike a servant who blindly obeys, a friend is brought into the master's plans.J
Jesus shares God's truth with us—He does not keep us in the dark.
Friendship with Jesus is Personal
A servant just obeys commands without full understanding
A friend knows the heart and intentions of the one they follow.
Jesus invites us into a deeper relationship where we understand His mission and purpose.
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Applying Jesus' Perspective on Friendship Practically
Sacrificial – Love selflessly by putting friends' needs above your own, being present in tough times, and giving without expecting in return (John 15:13).
Obedient – Choose friendships that honor God, set healthy boundaries, encourage accountability, and help each other grow spiritually (John 15:14).
Intimate – Be vulnerable, listen deeply, check in consistently, celebrate victories, and extend grace in conflicts (John 15:15).
