Pray Without Ceasing
Pray Without Ceasing
Jesus to have an attitude of prayer at all times
to pray without losing heart for the request to be answered
Jesus, in this parable is going to tell of another prayer
a prayer of confession
V 9
a prayer telling us about how to enter the kingdom of God
How to be Justified
to be declared not guilty by the Judge
one person here will leave Justified
the other will leave still in their sins
and the wrath of God will descend upon them in the judgement
lets look at this person right now
The Pharisee
The Pharisee
V 10
a pharisee a self righteous person, who through religious practices thinks that they are entering the kingdom
Judaism is a religion of works and in his prayer we will see his accomplishments
V 10 they went up to the temple
9 am and 3 pm the 3rd and 9th hour they sacrifice the sin offering for the people
at this time prayers are made by the people confessing their sins
so here are these 2 men
we are looking at the Pharisee
V 11
this prayer is a Soliloquy
in a play it is when an actor is speaking to the crowd saying what he is thinking about himself
this prayer is on the pretense that he is praying to God
but he is really putting on a play for the crowd
it is what Jesus warned about in the sermon on the mount
“And when you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
lets see what he was saying about himself
in 2 verses he says I, 5 times
he even compared himself against the tax collector
V 12
tithes and fast
this man had nothing to confess
he was as perfect as anyone could be
God would only be hurting Himself if I was not in the kingdom
There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.
all satanic religions seem right to a man
and there are 1000s of them
to include atheism
whatever floats your boat
but they all include some type of works
the work for the christian is done by Jesus on the cross
Jesus just before He died at the 9th hour when the temple was sacrificing the lamb for the sins of the people
he cried it is finished
the work of redemption for His people
Jesus became our propitiation
whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith, for a demonstration of His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;
Propitiation
the sacrifice of Jesus is what satisfies the wrath of the Father
against the people who believe on Jesus for salvation
it is the reason that God can have mercy on a person
because Jesus was the atonement for the sins of His people
so lets now look at the
Tax Collector
Tax Collector
V 13
this man is acknowledge his sin
knowing that he is worthy of the wrath of God to come upon him
that there is nothing in him deserving anything good from God
what he is asking is for the lambs sacrifice to be given to him
he is asking for propitiation
the atonement to be applied to himself
I need your mercy
I need your grace
V 13
Justified
Justified
V14a
The Pharisee thought by obeying the law that was good enough to be Justified
but in fact it was the low-down sinner that went away justified
what does justified mean?
to be declared righteous by the judge
to be declared not guilty
it is the only way to enter into Heaven
to be declared perfect by the Father
and you know that you on your own can never be declared perfect
Jesus took our sin upon himself
and His righteousness is put on us
turn to Romans 3 19-
V 19 the law makes everyone accountable to God for sin
V 20 keeping the law no one can do perfectly
no one even if they keep the whole law perfectly their whole lives can go to heaven because they were born in sin
like the pharisee
V 21-22
the only way to eternal life is through faith to receive the righteousness f God
V 23 ….
V 24
being declared not guilty
as a gift. a gift is free. a gift someone else chooses to give to you
By Grace. you did not deserve it
you did not earn it
its not for something you did
God in His sovereignty decided to give you grace
BUT He could not give Grace Justification, or the free gift
because he just wants to
it is because of the next words
Through the Redemption of Jesus
What is redemption?
New American Standard Hebrew-Aramaic and Greek Dictionaries: Updated Edition 629 ἀπολύτρωσις (apolutrōsis)
to release on payment of ransom); a release effected by payment of ransom:
Jesus bought His people with His precious blood
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our transgressions, according to the riches of His grace
V 25-26
Jesus satisfied the wrath of The Father toward our sin
The Father is the Justifier of those who repent and believe in Jesus
V 27-28…
Luke 18 11-
the pharisee as good as he is. is going to hell
he will face the wrath of God
V 13
Came by faith an pleaded for mercy
He came in repentance for his sin
came trusting in God for mercy
V 14 Humble is the only way we can come to Jesus
the only way we can come is with a broken spirit like the tax collector
unlike the pharisee who was very proud of his goodness
Prayer
Prayer
are we like the pharisee when we pray?
looking down at others thinking I am so much better
we may not say it out loud but are we thinking it?
OR
do we look at ourselves and say I thank you lord for the gift
I thank you Lord for redemption
I thank you Lord for being my propitiation
Thank you Father for declaring me Justified
because of your grace
