Timmy and Sarah: The Battle of Praise
Timmy and Sarah sat at the back of the church, listening to Pastor Mark preach about worship as a weapon.
"When we praise God, walls fall, chains break, and the enemy is confused!" the pastor declared.
Timmy leaned over to Sarah. “I thought worship was just singing songs.”
Sarah nodded. “Me too! But he’s saying it’s like… a battle strategy?”
As Pastor Mark continued, he told the story of King Jehoshaphat, who sent singers ahead of the army. The enemy was completely destroyed—without a single weapon being used!
Sarah’s eyes lit up. “That’s amazing! Imagine fighting with just a song!”
Later that week, Timmy and Sarah’s faith was put to the test.
Timmy came home from school frustrated. "Sarah, it's not fair! There's a kid at school who keeps picking on me. I just wanna fight back!"
Sarah thought for a moment. “Maybe we should try worship.”
Timmy blinked. “Worship? How is singing going to stop a bully?”
Sarah grinned. “I don’t know, but if it worked for Jehoshaphat, it can work for us.”
That night, before bed, Sarah grabbed her ukulele, and Timmy started clapping along. Together, they sang:
🎶 This is how I fight my battles! 🎶
At first, it felt silly. But as they kept singing, something changed. Timmy felt his anger fade. Peace filled the room.
The next day, Timmy walked into school with a new confidence. Instead of feeling scared, he silently worshiped in his heart.
When the bully walked up to him, something strange happened—he turned and walked away!
Timmy was shocked. He ran home after school and told Sarah. "It worked! I didn’t even do anything. It’s like... the battle was already won!"
Sarah smiled. “That’s the power of worship.”
Timmy grinned. “From now on, I’m bringing my ‘weapon’ everywhere!”

I. The Power of Worship in Spiritual Warfare
Like Timmy and Sarah, many Christians misunderstand what worship actually is.
for some, worship has been relegated to the slow song during the song service.
Yes indeed that is one form of worship.
But worship is so much more
Biblical Definition of Worship
Biblical Definition of Worship
Worship, according to the Bible,
Is the act of giving reverence, honor, and adoration to God through our words, actions, and lives.
It is not just singing but a heart posture of surrender, obedience, and devotion to the Lord.
True worship is both spiritual and truthful—a lifestyle of honoring God in all we do.
23 “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
24 “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
"Worship is our response to God's greatness, expressed in love, obedience, and reverence." – A.W. Tozer
What Does It Mean to Worship in Spirit and in Truth?
What Does It Mean to Worship in Spirit and in Truth?
according to the passage we just read
This means true worship is not about outward rituals but about the heart and mind aligning with God's will.
Let’s break it down:
1. Worship in Spirit 🕊️
1. Worship in Spirit 🕊️
To worship in spirit means that worship is not just external but comes from within, led by the Holy Spirit.
Worship is from the heart, not just mechanical actions.
It requires a personal relationship with God through Jesus.
It is Spirit-led, meaning we are guided by the Holy Spirit, not just tradition.
14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
don’t just sing the words on the screen
but mean them
put yourself in the place where you are connecting directly to God
2. Worship in Truth 📖
2. Worship in Truth 📖
To worship in truth means to worship according to God’s Word and His character.
Worship is based on who God truly is, not on emotions or opinions.
It aligns with Scripture, meaning we worship the real God revealed in His Word.
It is honest and sincere, not fake or for show.
18 The Lord is near to all who call upon Him,
To all who call upon Him in truth.
it literally means being honest in how you worship God.
One of the reason I’ve started writing worship songs is because so many songs have been released that are so doctrinally incorrect.
don’t get me wrong, there are many many Godly songs be released.
but there are many songs that have a good beat, nice chorus. but the words are just Not true.
There’s a song they play on Shine FM that has a line that goes something like this
“You look at me and wouldn’t change a thing”
Kinda narcissistic if you ask me....
the bible clearly teaches Yes God Loves us, but that doesn’t mean He going to leave us the way we are!
18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.
6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
a major part of the Christian walk is the fact that God is changing us into who He wants us to be
Its core to discipleship
every day we should become more and more like Jesus!
Putting It Together
True worship happens when our hearts are engaged (Spirit) and our worship aligns with God’s truth.
It is not about a place (like the Samaritan woman thought in John 4)
Nor is it just singing
instead it is about a relationship with God.
worship is the culmination of knowing who God is and allowing it to impact every area of your Life
You can worship God mowing the grass or washing the dishes.
as long a you due it unto the lord
23 Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,
24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.
When ever you do your work for the Lord....that is an act of worship.
Actions, words, singing, thoughts It’s all a part of worship!
to recap
✅ In Spirit: Worshiping with passion and the leading of the Holy Spirit.
✅ In Truth: Worshiping according to God’s Word and who He is.
So now we’ve laid the foundation of worship, lets take a look at the role worship plays in Spiritual warfare
3 things worship accomplishes
A. Worship shifts our focus from the battle to God
A. Worship shifts our focus from the battle to God
12 “O our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this great multitude who are coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are on You.”
The part of this verse that sticks out to me is the last part. “We Don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you”!
In 2 Chronicles 20:12, the people of Judah were facing a vast army made up of three enemy nations:
The Moabites
The Ammonites
and likely The Edomites
These enemies united to wage war against King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah.
In response, Jehoshaphat called the people to fast and pray, seeking God’s help.
Instead of fighting with weapons, Judah sent out worshipers ahead of their army, and God caused their enemies to destroy each other!
Worship lifts our perspective from the problem to the One who can solve our problems.
B. Worship invites God's presence and power
B. Worship invites God's presence and power
3 Yet You are holy,
O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.
God inhabits the praises of His people
Worship creates an atmosphere for God's intervention.
When we worship, we invite God to be part of the process.
Instead of grumbling and complaining, choose to worship the one worthy of all worship
Invite Him into the situation
allow Him to be God in the turmoil
As long as you complain, you block His action
Worship invites Him to intercede,
because it positions you to receive
C. Worship confuses the enemy
C. Worship confuses the enemy
22 When they began singing and praising, the Lord set ambushes against the sons of Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; so they were routed.
“The Lord set ambushes against their enemies."
The 3 nations that rose up against Judah, were so confused at what was happening they started killing each other.
so completely, Judah didn’t have to raise a sword
The enemy expects fear, but our praise declares faith!
they don’t know what to do with that
it doesn’t compute.
I’m reminded of the people of Israel after crossing the Jordan, and finding there 1st battle of the promised land to be the great city of Jericho.
God’s military strategy for them was to march around the city of Jericho 1 each day for 6 days, then on the 7 day march 7 times
Then lift up a shout of praise when the trumpets sound.
And the Walls came tumbling down.
But Have you ever thought about what the people of Jericho must have been thinking?
This was a strategy, they could have never even conceived of
They knew Israel was a formidable enemy, but they had their walls that had never been defeated
I would completely believe the people of Jericho were probably pretty confused at what was going on!
“Everyone hold fast” the enemy is approaching
“What kind of weapons do they have?”
None............
What None......
It actually looks like their worshipers are their vanguard
yup their worshippers are leading the way!
That’s preposterous
No one would lead with their worshippers
let me see that.
well?
Your right, their worshippers are leading the army against us
What does that mean?
I don’t know
That’s what worship does,
it confuses the enemy
it thwarts their plans
II. Worship in the Midst of the Storm
II. Worship in the Midst of the Storm
Casting Crowns release a song in 2005 called Praise You in This storm
It begins with.....
I was sure by now God, You would have reached down
And wiped our tears away Stepped in and saved the day
And once again I say, "A-men" and it's still rainin'
A. Paul and Silas: Victory through praise
25 But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them;
26 and suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison house were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened.
They worshipped at midnight – darkest hour, yet they sang.
The prison shook – Worship shifts situations and brings breakthroughs.
B. Jehoshaphat’s army: Praise before the victory
21 When he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who sang to the Lord and those who praised Him in holy attire, as they went out before the army and said, “Give thanks to the Lord, for His lovingkindness is everlasting.”
The singers led the army, and victory came before a sword was lifted.
Worship is not a response to victory—it is a declaration of victory!
C. Jericho’s walls fell after praise
20 So the people shouted, and priests blew the trumpets; and when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted with a great shout and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight ahead, and they took the city.
These 3 stories serve as examples for us to Worship God not inspite of our circumstance,
but because of our circumstance
Meaning
we flip the table on the enemy,
When He tries to steal, Kill, and destroy us
we turn it into worship of our God
The shout of praise broke down barriers.
Worship still breaks spiritual strongholds today!
III. How to Use Worship as a Weapon
III. How to Use Worship as a Weapon
A. Worship with faith, not feelings
A. Worship with faith, not feelings
Praise is a choice, not a reaction.
17 Though the fig tree should not blossom
And there be no fruit on the vines,
Though the yield of the olive should fail
And the fields produce no food,
Though the flock should be cut off from the fold
And there be no cattle in the stalls,
18 Yet I will exult in the Lord,
I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.
B. Worship with your voice and your life
B. Worship with your voice and your life
15 Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.
Its not always easy, personally some of the most powerful times of worship, have been during the most desperate times
True worship is surrender
1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
C. Worship in unity with others
C. Worship in unity with others
Acts 16:25 – Paul and Silas prayed together and chains broke.
25 But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them;
Corporate worship strengthens the Body of Christ
Its one of the fundamental reason why we join together
to sing, praise and worship together
Conclusion: Victory is in Your Worship!
Conclusion: Victory is in Your Worship!
Worship is more than a song—it’s a battle cry.
When we praise, we fight!
Call to action: Encourage the congregation to lift their voices in praise and declare victory over their battles.
