This week we read Parasha Beshalach, Exodus 13:17-17:16, which brings us the finale of the Exodus from Egypt. We begin with the end of Exodus 13, after Pharaoh has already kicked Israel out. But, the shortest route from Egypt to the Promised Land is through the territory of the Philistines and the Lord knew that if Israel went that route they’d see war and instantly become afraid and want to return to Egypt. So, instead, God leads them in a round about way to the Yam Suf, and the Torah specifically says that Israel left Egypt armed and with the bones of Joseph, and with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night which lead the Israelites and did not depart from them.
In chapter 14 we see the Lord directing Israel to journey and encamp in an odd fashion, which was specifically for the purpose of making Pharaoh think Israel was lost and wandering aimlessly. At the same time HaShem hardens Pharaoh’s heart so that he’d chase after Israel so that HaShem could, once and for all, be glorified over Pharaoh. He does in fact chase after Israel and there is a tremendous account of Israel’s final redemption as the Yam Suf is parted and Israel walks through on dry ground, while the Presence of God creates a barrier between B’nei Israel and Egypt’s forces, followed by Pharaoh and his armies rushing into the sea and the waters crashing down upon them.
In chapter 15 we see the first of the two songs attributed to Moses, the second being in Deuteronomy 32, as well as Miriam’s song. Next we see Israel grumble because they’re thirsty and by Adonai’s instruction Moses turns the bitter waters sweet.
In chapter 16 we read about the miraculous provision of Man Hu (manna) from heaven, with a double portion provided on Friday for Shabbat and none provided on Shabbat itself. And in chapter 17 we read about Israel grumbling for water again and Adonai directing Moses to hit the rock and water miraculously being provided from it. And at the end of our Parsha we se the Amalekites (descendants of Esau) attacking B’nei Yisrael and Aaron and Hur holding up the arms of Moses while Joshua leads Israel in battle and victory.

Exodus 14:10–14 TLV
10 When Pharaoh drew near, Bnei-Yisrael lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them! So they were terrified, and Bnei-Yisrael cried out to Adonai. 11 They said to Moses, “Have you taken us away to die in the wilderness because there were no graves in Egypt? Why have you dealt this way with us, to bring us out of Egypt? 12 Did we not say to you in Egypt, ‘Let us alone, so that we may serve the Egyptians?’ It was better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness!” 13 But Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid! Stand still, and see the salvation of Adonai, which He will perform for you today. You have seen the Egyptians today, but you will never see them again, ever! 14 Adonai will fight for you, while you hold your peace.”

Exodus 14:15–18 TLV
15 Then Adonai said to Moses, “Why are you crying to Me? Tell Bnei-Yisrael to go forward. 16 Lift up your staff, stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it. Then Bnei-Yisrael will go into the midst of the sea on dry ground. 17 Then I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will go in after them, so that I will be glorified over Pharaoh and all his army, his chariots and his horsemen. 18 Then the Egyptians will know that I am Adonai, when I have been glorified over Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”

The Angel of G-d moved between Israel and Egypt’s forces
The cloud of G-d’s Presence also moved between Israel and Egypts forces
There was darkness and confusion on Egypt’s side and light on Israel’s side
THEN Moses did what G-d said and stretched out his hands and G-d parted the sea and Israel entered the sea on dry ground
Talmud, Sotah 37a; Midrash Rabbah says, with regards to Exodus 14:22
Why does it say “The children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground”? If they went into the sea, then why does it say “on the dry ground”; and if they went on the dry ground, then why does it say that they went “into the midst of the sea”? This is to teach that the sea was divided only after Israel had stepped into it and the waters had reached their noses—only then did it become dry land.
The daughters of Israel passed through the sea holding their children with their hands; and when these cried, they would stretch out their hands and pluck an apple or a pomegranate from the sea and give it to them.
Likewise, Jewish tradition says Israel entered the sea singing Mi Chamocha… (Exodus 15:11)
Egypt’s forces are thrown into confusion and get crushed by the sea as Israel crosses on dry ground
Exodus 14:26 G-d tells Moses to stretch out his hands over the sea again and the waters crash down over Egypt’s forces
Exodus 14:29–31 TLV
29 But Bnei-Yisrael had walked on dry land in the midst of the sea, and the waters were like walls to them on their right hand and on their left. 30 So Adonai saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 When Israel saw the great work that Adonai did over the Egyptians, the people feared Adonai, and they believed in Adonai and in His servant Moses.

In 2 Chronicles 20 we see King Jehoshaphat and Judah faced down the armies of the Moabites and Ammonites…
Judah is watching a great multitude of an army coming at them
The Ruach comes upon Jahaziel the Levite and he tells Judah and King Jehoshaphat—
2 Chronicles 20:15–17 TLV
15 and he said: “Listen all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem and King Jehoshaphat. Thus Adonai says to you, ‘Do not be afraid or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 Tomorrow go down against them as they come up the ascent of Ziz. You will find them at the end of the valley in front of the wilderness of Jeruel. 17 You will not fight in this battle. Take your positions, stand and see the salvation of Adonai with you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or be dismayed. Tomorrow go out to face them, for Adonai is with you.’ ”

2 Chronicles 20:20–22 TLV
20 Early in the morning they arose and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. As they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, O Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in Adonai your God and you will be confirmed. Trust in His prophets and you will succeed.” 21 After consulting with the people, he appointed singers to Adonai praising the splendor of His holiness, as they went out before the army saying, “Praise Adonai, for His mercy endures forever.” 22 As they began singing and praising, Adonai set ambushes against the children of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir who had come against Judah, and they were defeated.

Luke 8:22–25 TLV
22 Now on one of those days Yeshua and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, “Let’s move to the other side of the lake.” So they set out. 23 Then as they were sailing, He fell asleep. A violent windstorm came down on the lake, and they were swamped with water and in danger. 24 They came to Yeshua and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re perishing!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging wave of water. Then they stopped, and it became calm. 25 Then Yeshua said to them, “Where is your faith?” But they were afraid and marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him!”
