Video - Week 5
Title of the Series this Morning is “Joy”
Title of the Message this Morning is: Finding Joy in All Circumstances - Week 5 -
Week 1 - Enjoying God
Week 2 - Enjoying Yourself
Week 3 - Enjoying Family
Week 4 - Enjoying Your Job - Week 4
Big Idea -
We can find joy in all circumstances by focusing on the eternal hope of salvation that God has given us, which far outweighs any suffering we endure in this life.
Prayer-
“Lord, thank You for the living hope we have in Jesus Christ.
Help us to lift our eyes from our temporary trials and find joy in Your eternal promises.
Teach us to trust You in all circumstances, knowing that our inheritance is secure in You.”
Main Scripture - 1 Peter 1:3-5
Introduction
Introduction
Transition
There is a picture of the early church, receiving a letter from Peter telling about how to suffer well, about how to have joy during suffering.
The New Testament writers combined two ideas: joy and
suffering; they understood the secrets on how to have joy in any circumstance.
And that is what I'll be sharing with you today.
Main Teaching
Main Teaching
Turn in your Bibles to 1 Peter 1:3.
I’m going to read verses 3-5. Listen for three things that Peter lets us know about our
salvation:
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a
living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 and into
an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven
for you.
Notice three things to highlight there.
A new birth, an inheritance and a salvation.
He starts highlighting all of these wonderful things that have happened in a Christ followers’ life.
And then he wants to jump into the idea of suffering.
Verse 6 says 6 You rejoice in this, even
though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials
Notice that it says that you rejoice in “this.”
I believe that “this” is referring back to all of those things in verses
three through five.
Based on this we learn that you can have joy in suffering
because:
Reason 1: You have new life and an imperishable
inheritance
The first thing that Peter wants to do is focus on what benefits you have when you are a Christ follower.
There's something about focusing on your salvation at the same time as suffering can bring joy into our hearts.
In fact, it makes me question, how many times do I sit down and just think about what God has done for my life?
How often do I sit and think about my salvation that he has given to me?
Illustration
Peter also tells us another way to find joy.
How to find joy: Focus on what is eternal
I think Peter wants us to focus and rejoice in salvation and remember that our suffering is temporary.
Look again at verse 6.
6 You rejoice in this, even though now for a
short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials
Often when we do experience pain and suffering, it could be this was you this morning and you're going through it.
And I've noticed when people do this, they start to focus inward, and they start to focus on themselves.
And that's the natural reaction.
But I think what Peter's saying is Remember the good things that God has done in your life
Illustration
Let's look at the second thing that Peter tells
us. Peter tells us the second reason we suffer.
Reason 2: Suffering shows faith
to be true
Again, this is verse six. You rejoice in this, even though for now, for a short time if
necessary, you suffer grief in various trials.
So suffering has a purpose.
It proves your faith.
If it is never tested, then you may not know how strong your faith is.
And so let me give an example of this.
I’ve seen Christians with weak faith lose their faith when something bad happens.
When there's that earth shattering diagnosis, when you lose a loved one and your perception of the world gets shaken up, if you have weak faith, then that's when you fall away and you abandon everything that you had thought.
But if you have strong faith, you persevere because you're being tested.

Conclusion
Conclusion
How to find joy: Believe that suffering has a
purpose.
How do you find joy if you are right in the middle of a trial?
Remember that Jesus knows your suffering and is
with you.
When you are suffering, you can know that Jesus
knows your pain.
You can look to Jesus because he too has suffered.
When you feel betrayed and it hurts, Jesus was betrayed by one of his closest friends.
When you feel alone, Jesus' disciples left him all alone.
When you lose a loved one, Jesus lost Lazarus, and then he had to actually bring him back.
When you are sick, Jesus knows what it feels like to feel terrible inside a human body.
And when you feel pain, Jesus knows excruciating pain.
Let’s pray together.
Let’s pray together.
Salvation:
Salvation:
The Word of God says in: John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
