What a great start to the weekend, what have yall enjoyed most so far?

What did you think of service tonight?

Session 1 Introduction

Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
How much does TRUST cost? How much does TRUST require?
We can trust a chair a little bit and still have a safe seat. We can trust a car or bus a little bit and still have a safe drive. We can trust any elevator a little bit and still make it to the correct floor.
When it comes to our TRUST in God, is a little bit of trust sufficient? How far will a little bit of TRUST take us?
God asks for our FULL TRUST in Him. WHY? Human understanding is subject to error. God, on the other hand, sees and understands all. He is the One we can lean on and trust. We should trust the Lord with all our heart because human understanding is tainted by sin, limited wisdom, impulsive assumptions, and faulty emotions. We are not always right.
Proverbs 14:12 reminds us of this: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death”. Sin taints our understanding and leads us to destruction
If fully trusting God is the goal, how do we achieve that? What does fully TRUSTING God look like? How do I start practicing TRUST in God today so that I can TRUST in the difficult times of life?
Let’s look at Proverbs 3:5 and discover how we can start TRUSTING in the Lord.

TRUSTING IN THE LORD

TAKES OUR EVERYTHING

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
For us to TRUST in the Lord with all of our heart, we first understand what is our heart.
How would you describe the heart?
WORD STUDY - HEART
The word for “heart” in Proverbs is the same word used to talk about the “heart” of God in other OT passages. (Gen 6:6; Gen 8:21; )
This word is also used to talk about the “heart” of Pharaoh and the Egyptians. (Ex 4:14; Ex 14:4)
This word is also used to address the faithful believers who seek after God. (Ps. 13:5; Ps. 19:14; Ps. 28:7)
591 times — the word “heart” is used in just the Old Testament. So what does the heart refer to? —t he “heart” is that spiritual part of us where our emotions and desires dwell. God and humans have a heart - emotions & desires. The difference between our hearts is that human’s heart are tainted by sin (Jeremiah 17:9 “9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”).
The heart is the core of our being where decisions are made through our emotions and desires. If we are to TRUST in the Lord with our heart, we must trust God with our emotions and desires that determine our decisions.
What are some everyday decisions in your life (often times there is no major weight)?
What are some one time decisions or few times decision (normally more weight to these decisions)?
DECISIONS DETERMINE YOUR DESTINATION
Decisions are based upon the source of our TRUST. Often times we think through a situation of future opportunity and make a decision on what we think is best for us. Do we know the exact outcome? - NO! Can we anticipate all the unknown factors? - NO! Yet we still make decisions that determine our destination because we TRUST ourself. We trust where our heart (emotions and desires) lead us.
What does the Bible say about our heart? (Jeremiah 17:9 “9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”).
So our heart (emotions and desires) is unable to make decisions that is confident of the outcome that is best for our life. How do we make decisions? PLACE OUR FULL TRUST IN JESUS! It’s easy to say “trust Jesus with all of your heart” how do you actually do it?
Recognize who knows our heart best (Psalm 44:21 “21 would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart.”) Jesus is the one who knows our heart best - Mar 7:21-23.
God must FIRST change our heart when one chooses to surrender to Jesus.
Next, we must secure our heart from our past and the present world around us. (Proverbs 4:23)
Trusting in the Lord with all of heart is guarding our heart from falling to into its original state.
