The House That God Builds

Notes
Transcript
1. Christ builds His Church (11b – All wisdom comes from one Shepherd).
Matthew 16:18 CSB
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
Jesus alone qualified. Elders nor members build the church. Trouble when we try!

2. The Bible is our sole authority (11b The Shepherd gives His Word).
a. It is written by the Great Shepherd
2 Timothy 3:15–17 CSB
15 and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Peter 1:20-21
Above all, you know this: No prophecy of Scripture comes from the prophet’s own interpretation, 21 because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

b. It is sufficient to build our lives upon
IMPORTANT: We build our lives on Scripture, not our FEELINGS about Scripture.

Hebrews 4:12-13
For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 No creature is hidden from him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.

It dissects us.

Romans 15:4 CSB
4 For whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that we may have hope through endurance and through the encouragement from the Scriptures.
For whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction,[for a purpose] so that  1. We may have hope through endurance and 2. [we may have hope] through the encouragement from the Scriptures.

It’s important to it preached and taught, but it’s imperative we commit to reading and studying it ourselves.
ILLUS:  The Bereans in Acts 17 were commended because they searched Scripture themselves to make sure what they were taught was true.

3. Committed to solid teaching  (10-11a – Preachers use the Word to encourage and challenge) –
2 Timothy 2:15 CSB
15 Be diligent to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth.
Be diligent to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth.

2 Timothy 4:2 CSB
2 Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage with great patience and teaching.
Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage with great patience and teaching
All of these are a part of God’s plan for teaching, even though it doesn’t feel good or we don’t like it.
ILLUS: I hated being corrected or rebuked as kid, but I’m glad I got it!
Correction is like cattle prods (12:11). The cattle doesn’t like it, but gets them where they need to be.

We are committed to expositional preaching to assure that it’s the Word of God bringing the conviction and not the one who is preaching.
[Unpack “Expositional Preaching”]

4. Guard against erroneous teaching (12 Beyond this…) from modern books or teaching that deviate from the “faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.” (Jude 3). Many promote doctrines that “tickle the ears”
2 Timothy 4:3–4 CSB
3 For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear. 4 They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths.

ILLUS: A particular vegetable:
“Has a variety of health benefits, including its ability to improve digestion, lower cholesterol levels, and maximize vitamin and mineral uptake. It helps prevent allergic reactions, boost the immune system, protect the skin, lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and improved vision and ocular health.”
Problem: I don’t like Brocolli…unless doctored up.
My alterations eliminate the essentials of Brocolli.
Same happens when we alter “Christianity”

Colossians 2:8
Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ.

Galatians 1:6–8 CSB
6 I am amazed that you are so quickly turning away from him who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—7 not that there is another gospel, but there are some who are troubling you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, a curse be on him!
I am amazed that you are so quickly turning away from him who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 not that there is another gospel, but there are some who are troubling you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, a curse be on him![b]

5. Live out the Law of Grace in the fear of the Lord (13-14 Fear God and keep His commandments).

We understand the purpose of the Law of God was to reveal the depth of sin
Romans 7:7-13
What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! But I would not have known sin if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.[b] And sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind. For apart from the law sin is dead. Once I was alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life again 10 and I died. The commandment that was meant for life resulted in death for me. 11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good. 13 Therefore, did what is good become death to me? Absolutely not! But sin, in order to be recognized as sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that through the commandment, sin might become sinful beyond measure.

If we understand this, we fear the wrath of God.

We despair if we understand that we cannot live life without sinning. Romans 7:21-23
So I discover this law:[d] When I want to do what is good,[e] evil is present with me. 22 For in my inner self[f] I delight in God’s law, 23 but I see a different law in the parts of my body,[g] waging war against the law of my mind and taking me prisoner to the law of sin in the parts of my body.

We understand that we cannot save ourselves
Romans 7:24
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

We need a Savior!
Romans 7:25–8:4 CSB
25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I myself am serving the law of God, but with my flesh, the law of sin. 1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, 2 because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do since it was weakened by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering, 4 in order that the law’s requirement would be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus,[a] because the law[b] of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you[c] free from the law[d] of sin and death. For what the law could not do since it was weakened by the flesh,God did. This salvation leads us to fear the Lord: stand in awe of Him and worship Him.

This fuels us to live for Him, not just talk about Him!
James 1:22 But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

6. Grow together in fellowship as the Church established by Christ.
Hebrews 10:24–25 CSB
24 And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, 25 not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.

Hebrews 3:12–15 CSB
12 Watch out, brothers and sisters, so that there won’t be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception. 14 For we have become participants in Christ if we hold firmly until the end the reality that we had at the start. 15 As it is said: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.
