The Old Rugged Cross – Lyrics
The Old Rugged Cross – Lyrics
Verse 1
On a hill far away, stood an old rugged Cross
The emblem of suffering and shame
And I love that old Cross
where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain
Refrain
So I’ll cherish the old rugged Cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a crown
THAT SPECIAL PHRASE:
“I will cling to the old rugged cross”
How do we Cling to the Old Cross?
Last Week We Said...
We Cling to the Old Rugged Cross when We Develop Clingstone Faith...
6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
17 So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.
Where Do We Go From Here?
Let’s look at verse 2:
The Old Rugged Cross – Lyrics
The Old Rugged Cross – Lyrics
Verse 2 part one
Oh, that old rugged Cross
so despised by the world
Has a wondrous attraction for me
despised: transitive verb
1: to look down on with disrespect or aversion
despised the weak
2: to regard as negligible, worthless, or distasteful
despises organized religion
attraction: noun
attraction: noun
1: the act, process, or power of attracting like, personal charm
2: a force acting mutually between particles of matter, tending to draw them together, and resisting their separation
Paul writes about this attraction in Romans
*(READ OUT OF BIBLE)
Romans 7:6-25
Romans 8:1-16
Romans 12:1-2
There is a real attraction to this physical world however, because of the work on the cross--we don’t have to follow the way of the world.
This Way that Jesus provided for us is despised by the world— it does take Clingstone Faith.
6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
Verse 2 second part
For the dear Lamb of God,
left His Glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary
Who are we talking about here, “Lamb of God”?
JESUS!
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
The Last Line
To bear it to dark Calvary
Calvary we know, it was Golgotha,
skull-shaped hill in ancient Jerusalem
Known as “The Place of the Skull”.
“It”?
Is it, Sin? Satan?
No in the song it is, “Glory”?
Jesus brought his “glory” from heaven and he took it— his glory to The Place of the Skull!
How would Sin and Satan be overcome!
By His Sacrifice and dispensing his glory over our sin.
HIS GLORY BEFORE THE CROSS
23 Jesus replied, “Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory.
In John’s Gospel, the death of Jesus initiates his glorification.
John sees all the succeeding events—the arrest, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension—as the “glory” of Jesus.
32 And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.”
First, literally, Jesus will be lifted up physically on the cross as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness
14 And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,
Second, Jesus is going to be lifted up figuratively—raised in the estimation of people to a place of exaltation, a place of glory.
13 See, my servant will prosper; he will be highly exalted.
He will be exalted by having no majesty or beauty,
being despised and rejected,
being smitten and stricken by God, and
being pierced and crushed for our sins.
As the Lord lays on him our guilt,
by his wounds we are healed.
This is how Jesus the Messiah is exalted and His death is his glory.
HIS GLORY ON THE CROSS
The supreme way Jesus displays the glory of God is at the cross.
At the cross, Jesus pays the penalty of sin on behalf of sinners.
At the cross, Jesus displays both the mercy and justice of God.
The glory that Moses heard at Mount Sinai is the glory that we see in Jesus at Mount Calvary.
Therefore, Jesus views his unattractive death as his glory because through it he exhibits the majestic glory of God.
HIS GLORY AFTER THE CROSS
1 After saying all these things, Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you.
2 For you have given him authority over everyone. He gives eternal life to each one you have given him.
3 And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.
4 I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.
5 Now, Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the world began.
6 “I have revealed you to the ones you gave me from this world. They were always yours. You gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
LOOKING AT THE JOY JESUS SAW AFTER
THE CROSS
27 For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.
27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Refrain
So I’ll cherish the old rugged Cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a crown
We don’t do this alone— we are the body of Christ and we make His Glory available to those far from God so they can come close...since—
13 But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.
14 For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us.
15 He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups.
16 Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death.
17 He brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and peace to the Jews who were near.
18 Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us.
19 So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family.
20 Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.
21 We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord.
22 Through him you Gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.
LAST WEEK WE ASKED...
WHO WILL YOU SHARE THE STORY OF JESUS WITH THIS WEEK TO LET FAITH ARISE?
I SAY WE AS THE SAME QUESTION FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE...
WHO WILL YOU SHARE THE GLORY OF JESUS WITH THIS WEEK?
27b Christ in you, the hope of glory.
