Ἦν δὲ ἄνθρωπος ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων, Νικόδημος ὄνομα αὐτῷ, ἄρχων τῶν Ἰουδαίων· 2 οὗτος ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν νυκτὸς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· ῥαββί, οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἀπὸ θεοῦ ἐλήλυθας διδάσκαλος·* οὐδεὶς γὰρ δύναται ταῦτα τὰ σημεῖα ποιεῖν ἃ σὺ ποιεῖς, ἐὰν μὴ ᾖ ὁ θεὸς μετʼ αὐτοῦ. 3 ἀπεκρίθη ⸆ Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω σοι,* ἐὰν μή τις γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν, οὐ δύναται ἰδεῖν τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ. 4 Λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν °[ὁ] Νικόδημος· πῶς δύναται ⸂ἄνθρωπος γεννηθῆναι γέρων ὤν⸃; μὴ δύναται εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ δεύτερον εἰσελθεῖν καὶ γεννηθῆναι; 5 ἀπεκρίθη ⸆ Ἰησοῦς· ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω σοι, ἐὰν μή τις ⸀γεννηθῇ ἐξ ὕδατος καὶ πνεύματος,* οὐ δύναται ⸂εἰσελθεῖν εἰς⸃ τὴν βασιλείαν ⸄τοῦ θεοῦ⸅. 6 τὸ γεγεννημένον ἐκ τῆς σαρκὸς σάρξ ἐστιν,* καὶ τὸ γεγεννημένον ἐκ τοῦ πνεύματος πνεῦμά ἐστιν. 7 μὴ θαυμάσῃς ὅτι εἶπόν σοι· δεῖ ὑμᾶς γεννηθῆναι ἄνωθεν. 8 τὸ πνεῦμα ὅπου θέλει πνεῖ καὶ τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ ἀκούεις, ἀλλʼ οὐκ οἶδας πόθεν ἔρχεται καὶ ποῦ ὑπάγει·* οὕτως ἐστὶν πᾶς ὁ γεγεννημένος ἐκ ⸆ τοῦ πνεύματος. 9 Ἀπεκρίθη Νικόδημος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· πῶς δύναται ταῦτα γενέσθαι;* 10 ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ·* σὺ εἶ ὁ διδάσκαλος τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ταῦτα οὐ γινώσκεις; 11 ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω σοι ὅτι ὃ οἴδαμεν λαλοῦμεν καὶ ὃ ἑωράκαμεν μαρτυροῦμεν,* καὶ τὴν μαρτυρίαν ἡμῶν οὐ λαμβάνετε. 12 εἰ τὰ ἐπίγεια εἶπον ὑμῖν καὶ οὐ πιστεύετε,* πῶς ἐὰν εἴπω ὑμῖν τὰ ἐπουράνια ⸀πιστεύσετε;* 13 καὶ οὐδεὶς ἀναβέβηκεν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εἰ μὴ ὁ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβάς, ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου⸆.* 14 Καὶ καθὼς Μωϋσῆς ὕψωσεν τὸν ὄφιν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, οὕτως ὑψωθῆναι δεῖ τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου,* 15 ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων ⸂ἐν αὐτῷ⸃ ⸆ ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον.* 16 οὕτως γὰρ ἠγάπησεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν κόσμον, ὥστε τὸν υἱὸν ⸆ τὸν μονογενῆ ἔδωκεν, ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν μὴ ἀπόληται ἀλλʼ ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον.* 17 οὐ γὰρ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν υἱὸν ⸆ εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἵνα κρίνῃ τὸν κόσμον, ἀλλʼ ἵνα σωθῇ ὁ κόσμος διʼ αὐτοῦ. 18 ὁ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν οὐ κρίνεται· ὁ °δὲ μὴ πιστεύων ἤδη κέκριται, ὅτι μὴ πεπίστευκεν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ μονογενοῦς υἱοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ. 19 αὕτη δέ ἐστιν ἡ κρίσις ὅτι* °τὸ φῶς ἐλήλυθεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον καὶ ⸉ἠγάπησαν οἱ ἄνθρωποι μᾶλλον τὸ σκότος⸊* ἢ τὸ φῶς· ἦν γὰρ ⸉1αὐτῶν πονηρὰ⸊ τὰ ἔργα.* 20 πᾶς γὰρ ὁ φαῦλα πράσσων μισεῖ τὸ φῶς καὶ οὐκ ἔρχεται πρὸς τὸ φῶς, ἵνα μὴ ἐλεγχθῇ ⸂τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ⸃· * 21 ὁ δὲ ποιῶν τὴν ἀλήθειαν ἔρχεται πρὸς τὸ φῶς, ἵνα φανερωθῇ αὐτοῦ τὰ ἔργα ὅτι ἐν θεῷ ἐστιν εἰργασμένα.*

22 Μετὰ ταῦτα ἦλθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν* Ἰουδαίαν γῆν καὶ ἐκεῖ διέτριβεν μετʼ αὐτῶν καὶ ἐβάπτιζεν.*

*23 Ἦν δὲ καὶ °ὁ Ἰωάννης βαπτίζων ἐν Αἰνὼν ἐγγὺς τοῦ Σαλείμ,* ὅτι ὕδατα πολλὰ ἦν ἐκεῖ, καὶ παρεγίνοντο καὶ ἐβαπτίζοντο· *24 οὔπω γὰρ ἦν βεβλημένος εἰς τὴν φυλακὴν °ὁ Ἰωάννης.

*25 Ἐγένετο οὖν ζήτησις ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν Ἰωάννου μετὰ ⸀Ἰουδαίου περὶ καθαρισμοῦ.* 26 καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς τὸν Ἰωάννην καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· ῥαββί,* ὃς ἦν μετὰ σοῦ πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, ᾧ σὺ μεμαρτύρηκας, ἴδε οὗτος βαπτίζει καὶ πάντες ἔρχονται πρὸς αὐτόν.* 27 Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰωάννης καὶ εἶπεν·* οὐ δύναται ἄνθρωπος λαμβάνειν ⸂οὐδὲ ἓν⸃ ἐὰν μὴ ᾖ δεδομένον αὐτῷ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ.* *28 αὐτοὶ ὑμεῖς °μοι μαρτυρεῖτε ὅτι εἶπον ⸀[ὅτι] οὐκ εἰμὶ °1ἐγὼ ὁ χριστός,* ἀλλʼ ὅτι ἀπεσταλμένος εἰμὶ ἔμπροσθεν ἐκείνου.* *29 ὁ ἔχων τὴν νύμφην νυμφίος ἐστίν·* ὁ δὲ φίλος τοῦ νυμφίου ὁ ἑστηκὼς καὶ ἀκούων αὐτοῦ χαρᾷ χαίρει διὰ τὴν φωνὴν τοῦ νυμφίου. αὕτη οὖν ἡ χαρὰ ἡ ἐμὴ πεπλήρωται.* 30 ἐκεῖνον δεῖ αὐξάνειν, ἐμὲ δὲ ἐλαττοῦσθαι.

31 Ὁ ἄνωθεν ἐρχόμενος ἐπάνω πάντων ἐστίν·* ὁ ὢν ἐκ τῆς γῆς ἐκ τῆς γῆς ἐστιν καὶ ἐκ τῆς γῆς λαλεῖ. ὁ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐρχόμενος ⸋[ἐπάνω πάντων ἐστίν]⸌· * 32 ⸆ὃ ἑώρακεν καὶ ἤκουσεν °τοῦτο μαρτυρεῖ, καὶ τὴν μαρτυρίαν αὐτοῦ οὐδεὶς λαμβάνει. 33 ὁ λαβὼν αὐτοῦ τὴν μαρτυρίαν ⸆ ἐσφράγισεν ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἀληθής ἐστιν.* 34 ὃν γὰρ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ θεοῦ λαλεῖ, οὐ γὰρ ἐκ μέτρου δίδωσιν ⸂τὸ πνεῦμα⸃. *35 ὁ πατὴρ ἀγαπᾷ τὸν υἱὸν καὶ πάντα δέδωκεν ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ.* *36 ὁ πιστεύων εἰς τὸν υἱὸν ἔχει ζωὴν αἰώνιον· ὁ °δὲ ἀπειθῶν τῷ υἱῷ οὐκ ὄψεται ζωήν, ἀλλʼ ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ μένει ἐπʼ αὐτόν.*

[1] But there was a man from the Pharisees, his name Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;
[2] This [one] came to him at night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher that came from God, for no one is able to do these signs that you do if he is not from the God.
[3] Jesus answered him and said, “Truly truly I say to you, if someone is not born from above, they cannot enter the kingdom of God.
[4] Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born again [if] he is old? [He] is not able to enter into the womb of his mother a second time and be born?
[5] Jesus replied, “Truly, truly I say to you, if then someone is not born out of water and Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
[6] The one who is born out of the flesh is flesh, and the one who is born out of the Spirit is spirit.
[7] Do not marvel that I say this to you, it is necessary that you be born from above.
[8] The Spirit [wind?] blows where it wants to and [you?] hear the sound of his voice, but you do not know from where it comes and where it goes; so it is with everyone born out of the Spirit [wind?].
[9] Nicodemus replied and said to him, “How can this be?”
[10] Jesus replied and said to him, “You are the teacher of Israel and cannot understand this?
[11] Truly, truly I say to you that we know, we say, and we witness to what we see, and we do not receive testimony.
[12] If I say earthly things and you do not believe, how then [can I] say heavenly things and you believe?
[13] But no one can go up into the heaven if if he does not have the one that came down out of heaven, the son of man.
[14] And just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, thus the son of man must be lifted up,
[15] So that all who believe in him have life eternal.
[16] Thus for God loved the world, he gave the son, the one and only, so that all who believe in him might not perish but have life eternal.
[17] For the God did not send the son to the world to judge the world, but to save the world through him.
[18] The ones who believe in him are not judged, but those who don’t believe are already being judged, because they do not believe in the name of the one and only son of God.
[19] But this is the judgement, that the light has come into the world and men loved the darkness more than the light, for in them are wicked deeds.
[20] For all who practice evil hate the light and do not come toward the light, in order that he is not exposed by his works.
[21] But those in the truth come towards the light, so that his works might be revealed that God is working in them. (?)
[22] After this Jesus and his disciples went to Judea land and spent time with them and was baptizing.
[23] And there John baptized in Ainon near the Salim because there was much water there, and he came baptizing,
[24] for John had not yet been thrown into prison.
[25] Then there was a debate from the disciples of John with Jews about purification.
[26] And they came to John and said to him, “Teacher, who is with you on the other side of the Jordan, that you testify to, behold this one baptizes and all are going to him.
[27] And John replied to them, “Neither does man receive nor does he receive the one who is out of heaven.
[28] You all…my testimony that said that, “I am not the Christ, but that I was sent before that one.
[29] The one who has the bride, the bridegroom is. But the friend of the bridegroom stands and hears him with joy and rejoices at the sound of the bridegroom. Now this, my joy is complete.
[30] It is necessary that he grows, and I decrease.
[31] The one from above is over everyone; the one from the earth is from the earth and from the earth speaks. The one from out of heaven is above all;
[32] He sees and he heard this testimony, and the testimony he does not receive.
[33] He received the testimony sealed from the God that is truth.
[34] For the God sent the Word of God saying, for not out of measure did he grant the Spirit. (??)
[35] The Father loves the Son and everyone he has given into his hand.
[36] The one who believes in the son has life eternal; but the one who disobeys the Son does not have life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.
