Intro

Well as you can tell — Gideon is still chilling!
We’ve been telling him that he is evicted, but I guess he doesn’t want to hang out with dad lol
Anyways!
We are in Mark chapter 5
We’ve been flying through the book of Mark, at least it feels that way
It’s been so fun and such a joy for me to read the book of Mark knowing that the entire Student ministry across all three campuses — leaders, students, and families — are all studying the same thing
Well before we hit anything from chapter 5 I want to give you a synopsis of everything that we didn’t talk about!
VS. 21-25: Jesus tells the parable of the lamp — explaining the importance of not keeping your faith a secret
VS. 26-29: Jesus tells the parable of the growing seed — explaining how we are to share the Gospel and God controls the growth of the people hearing the message
VS. 30-34: Jesus tells the parable of the Mustard Seed — showing how the Gospel may not seem like much but that it creates life change in everything that accepts it
VS. 35-41: Jesus calms the storm — while sleeping on a boat a storm comes and is destroying the boat, Jesus is woken up and goes and calms the storm
5:1-20: Jesus heals a demon possessed man — He heals the crazy naked chained up man and shows his power once again over the demons
Man I’m telling you guys there has been a lot that is happening!
If you aren’t reading the book of Mark with us you are missing out on some very powerful things!
Things that can and will change your life!
Today is no exception — I believe this section we are going to read gives us a formula for how to go about life!

Bring your desperation to Jesus

We are going to look at two accounts of Jesus performing a miracle that gives us what I believe is the blueprint for how to approach Jesus
Mark 5:21–23 ESV
21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. 22 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.”
Mark 5:25–27 ESV
25 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment.
We get the picture of two very different people here
One of them is a Pharisee — a ruler in the synagogue, a wealthy high status man
The other is a women who is an outcast, considered unclean and not supposed to be around people because of her condition
One of them gets their name in the Bible, the other is just called “a woman”
Both people — Jairus and the woman — have spent money, time, energy, everything trying to fix the problem they are facing
For Jairus his daughter is dying
For the woman she has a condition where she can’t stop bleeding
In both cases nothing has helped — nothing has solved their issues
Despite Jairus’ status he cannot save his daughter
Despite the money spent the woman can’t find healing
Here’s the first point for us today:
Bring your desperation to Jesus Humbly
We need to bring our desperation to Jesus
Bring your desperation to Jesus
The thing that is making you spend all your time, effort, energy, money on — go to Jesus with it instead!
Jairus was a man of high status and wealthy, the woman was at this point an outcast yet they had something in common
They were desperate
They realized that there was something that they couldn’t do without Jesus and they both ran to Him
When you bring your desperation to Jesus I want you to notice something about both of them:
They did it humbly
We need to bring our desperation to Jesus with humility
Jairus was a leader in the synagogue — yet he humbled himself by bowing down at the feet of Jesus
He threw his social status out the window to come humbly to Jesus knowing who Jesus was and who he was
The same can be said for the woman
She is an outcast — ceremonially unclean
She is on the same social status as a demon possessed man that Jesus healed just verses earlier — the same social status as the man with the withered hand, the same social status as the paralyzed man
So in humility she seeks to only touch the garment of Jesus’ robe
In humility she doesn’t seek to make a scene but seeks to quietly and humbly go to Jesus
We must do the same thing!
In our desperation we must go to Jesus humbly
Removing any pride from our hearts: the pride of self, the pride of status, the pride of money, pride of family, pride of piety — anything!
We must remove the pride and humbly go to Jesus

Bring your desperation to Jesus with faith

The story for both of them continue
For the Woman:
Mark 5:28 ESV
28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.”
Mark 5:30–33 ESV
30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.
The woman was seeking to touch Jesus’ robe believing that this would make her well
Believing that all she needed to do was go to Jesus — she didn’t need a big scene
Jesus recognizes this and calls out who touched me
Lets make this clear — Jesus is all knowing — omniscient
He knew exactly who had touched Him, He knew exactly what had happened
He’s asking the question not out of His not knowing, but instead out of the opportunity for her to show her faith
For Jairus listen to what is happening
Mark 5:35–40 ESV
35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was.
Jairus is standing with Jesus while the woman is coming up to Him
While Jesus is speaking with the woman Jairus is alerted that his daughter has died
She went from sick to being dead
Notice what Jesus said to him: “do not fear, only believe”
Jesus is calling Jairus to continue the faith that he has in Jesus
The faith that Jairus had to first go to Jesus, Jesus tells him to continue that
“you believed I could heal her, believe that I can raise her”
Here’s the second thing:
Bring your desperation to Jesus with faith
When we are desperate and go to Jesus we must go to Him in faith
Jairus believed that Jesus could heal his daughter and is told to continue to have faith once she is dead
The woman in faith believed all she needed to do was touch the garment of Jesus’ robe
Both of them in their desperation came to Jesus with full faith that He can heal
That He can do the unthinkable
This needs to be our same reaction — when we go to Jesus we must go with full faith!
Notice that Jesus sent out all those who laughed when Jesus arrived at Jairus’ house
They laughed because they had a lack of faith in the Lord
Notice something
JESUS NEVER PERFORMED A MIRACLE FOR AN UNBELIEVING CROWD
Jesus never performed for those who had no faith in Him
The woman was pressed to express her faith in Jesus by declaring what had happened
FAITH ALWAYS REQUIRES CONFESSION
FAITH ALWAYS REQUIRES ACTION
In both situations they demonstrated faith
I don’t know about you — but there has been many times where I have been desperate and went to God, but there was no faith behind it
I went to God hoping He could do something, but not believing that He would
Guess what — God didn’t move in those moments
Maybe the same is true for you — you’re going to God out of desperation, but you don’t truly believe that God can do something
You are lacking faith
We must be like Jairus and the woman — having full faith in Jesus despite the situation

Humility and faith leads to healing

Both stories end in the same way
For the woman:
Mark 5:29 ESV
29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.
Mark 5:34 ESV
34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
Through her faith and humility Jesus heals her of her ailment
Notice something else — He calls her “daughter”
This is the only time in the New Testament where Jesus is recorded calling someone “daughter”
BECAUSE OF HER FAITH AND HUMILITY
She is healed — and the affectionate title daughter shows that she is not just physically healed but spiritually healed and saved
She is no longer far from Jesus but brought close
How about Jairus?
Mark 5:41–43 ESV
41 Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
Because of Jairus’ faith Jesus does the unthinkable
He not only heals her — he raises her from the dead
Something that is believed to be impossible
Jesus demonstrated His power over death — because of their faith!
Notice he said to do two things: (1) stay silent and (2) give her food
The silence is so that people don’t start following Him for the wrong reasons — Jesus isn’t a genie — He is God and Lord
The fact of food is to show that she is fully healed — completely in good health
Here’s the last point:
Humility and Faith leads to Healing
Our humility and faith in Jesus is what leads to healing
Both Jairus and the woman — now daughter of Jesus — showed humility and faith
Jairus gave up his social status to fall at the feet of Jesus, believed in Jesus’ power even when his daughter had died
The woman showed humility by not wanting to make a scene but just touch his garment, she showed faith in that she knew Jesus could heal her, and confessed her faith in Jesus when He pointed it out
We must understand that reality and order
It takes humility and faith to get to the healing
Not the other way around
Jesus cast out those who do not believe
Now I want to bring this up now
The physical healing isn’t the thing that matters
You can have all faith and humility and still not have your physical desire met
That isn’t the point
The point isn’t that Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead, or healed the woman from her physical ailment
The point was that in both cases their faith saved them
In both cases they are saved and made new in Jesus
In both cases its their Spiritual ailment — their sin — that is forgiven
Just like the paralyzed man, The Spiritual is what matters
It takes humility to run to Jesus
It takes faith in Jesus that He can save
And that is when He shows up and saves!
Every single time!
He might not always heal physically, but HE ALWAYS HEALS SPIRITUALLY!

Conclusion

Jairus and the woman give us the blueprint for how we should react in life
What we should do when we get desperate
We must humble ourselves to Jesus understanding who He is and who we are
And we must go to Him in faith — trusting and believing that He is Lord
