Devotion for an Ecumenical Pastors’ Meeting
Text: Luke 5:1-11
On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
"Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” (Luke 5:4, ESV)
As we gather as fellow laborers in God’s kingdom, called to equip the saints for ministry. In Luke 5, Jesus calls His disciples not from the safety of the shore but in the deep. His command to Peter—"Put out into the deep"—is also His call to us.
1. Obedience Precedes the Harvest
1. Obedience Precedes the Harvest
Peter had fished all night with no results, yet at Jesus’ word, he cast his nets again and witnessed a miraculous catch. Ministry often feels fruitless, but true effectiveness comes not from our efforts but from trusting Christ’s Word.
2. The Call to Go Deeper
2. The Call to Go Deeper
Jesus doesn’t call us to stay in the shallows. As pastors, we are to go deeper—immersing ourselves in the Word, prayer, and discipleship. Our role is not just to feed the flock but to train them to fish, equipping them for ministry.
3. The Mission is Bigger Than Us
3. The Mission is Bigger Than Us
Peter’s nets were breaking—he needed partners. Ministry is not a solo endeavor. Whether Lutheran, Presbyterian, Wesleyan or non-denominational, we serve the same kingdom. When we equip the saints together, the gospel reaches farther.
Peter, overwhelmed by Jesus' power, falls at His feet. Yet Jesus lifts him up and gives him a new mission: “From now on you will be catching men.” Christ calls us, not because we are worthy, but because of His grace. May we trust Him, equip His people, and go deeper together.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, strengthen us to trust You, to go deeper in faith, and to equip Your people for ministry. Bless our labor, and may Your name be glorified. Amen.
