Spiritual Sunscreen Psalm 3: 1-6

Intro

Have you not enjoyed the last few days. Something unfamiliar to us recently has hit us this week called the sun. And because of this you have had to make some changes. Maybe you have changed the way you dressed, Little drops of water called sweat might have been coming down from your forehead, changing the thermostat in your house and in your car, but one thing when we are not use to this kind of weather is we forget about protection. Typically what happens is people are susceptible to sunburn. Our skin is not use to it and we forget we even need sunscreen. But what happens when the heat gets turned up in your life, the pressure is on, things are going haywire, is there something to protect us from the elements around us?

The Heat David felt (1-2)

David is writing this when he is fled from his son Absolom in 2 Samual 15-18. He was in great grief, weeping greatly with his head covered. He was in great danger for his life with a plot to kill David. And he knew that this suffering was because of his sin in the killing of Uriah the Hittite. He was running for his life!

Could you and i imagine what he must of been feeling. The weight? The answer is YES. It might not the same circumstances but we feel the weight of this world. We are not exempt from tragedy, pains, and hard things.

LORD, How are they increased that trouble me!

Many are they that rise up against me.

v 1 Says: they are increased. It was like a snowball gaining more and more. They rise up against me. They aimed to kill him and trouble him.

2  Many there be which say of my soul,

There is no help for him in God. Selah.

What grieved David the most was that they said of his soul that God couldnt help me. They thought God had deserted him and tried to shake his confidence in God. SELAH-Stop there and consider this. For a child of God, there is no worse thought.

2. The Protection David Had

But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me;

My glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

BUT….Thank God David had an assurance beyond this world

are a shield (protection) for me- this shield was for David personally.

about me can also be rendered- to secure David on all sides since he was surrounded by his enemies. It was this hedge that Job spoke about. God had his divine hand and protection upon David.

3. The Comfort David Experienced

5  I laid me down and slept;

I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.

He slept! One of the things that we are robbed of when the heat is on is sleep. Im sure, you have had those restless nights, those nights that you cant sleep, those nights if you wake up that reality hits you in the face and fear fills you. But David Slept because of the protection he had. I dont care what kind of mattress you have, it cant bring calmness to the soul like the Lord can!

6  I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people,

He was UPcouraged- because of what God was to him on the inside, and the uplook was so great although the outlook remained unchanged, david was upcouraged. He was no longer going to be afraid of the 10 thousand because it wasn’t David in control it was the shield and the protection of David that held all of it!

closing thoughts:

Do you have your sunscreen handy? Im guilty for leaving it in a pool bag. Only when i think im going to find the heat. But the truth is…the places i typically get burned isnt at the pool. Its at a game, on the golf course, or just a conversation outside. I get burned when im not expecting it. And if i dont carry it around and have it readily availble, i will get burned.

Some people have sunscreen but they dont have enough SPF for protection. If its a really hot day, SPF 8 wont cut it. SPF 20 wont cut it. Are you and i so intune with God that when the heat is turned up, we have enough protection. David had SPF 100 if you ask me.

Some people dont have sunscreen so they ask to use yours. There is no doubt God made you a mom or a dad, a co worker, a friend, so that you sPRAY sunscreen over them and their situation so they dont get burned.

Clemsons baseball season is about to start up. And one of the things they do when they get several runs back to back is play a song called “the heat is on”. I think thats fitting. I can tell you the heat is on in my life, how about you. Can we sPRAY some protection upon you tonight. Or do you have a thought?
