The Astonishment of the Crowd

The crowds were astonished at the authority of Jesus’s teaching.
Mark 1:22 “And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.”
Luke 4:32 “and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority.”
John 7:46 “The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!””

Christ’s Authority Over All Things

Jesus spoke with authority because He has all authority.
Matthew 28:18 “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
Ephesians 1:21 “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.”
Hebrews 1:3 “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,”
Jesus has authority over creation.
Matthew 8:27 “And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?””
Jesus has authority over sickness.
Matthew 4:24 “So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them.”
Jesus has authority over demons and Satan.
Mark 1:27 “And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.””

Jesus has authority over life and death.
John 10:18 “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.””
Revelation 1:17–18 “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.”
Jesus has authority to judge us.
John 5:27 “And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.”
Jesus has authority to cast into hell.
Luke 12:5 “But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!”
Jesus has authority to forgive sins and to give eternal life.

Psalm 121:7–8 “The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.”
