Welcome to Vertical Church
42 And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers.
As a church we seek to uphold the values of the NT church as seen in Acts 2:42 -
We are Trinitarian - while God is one in essence, He is three in person: God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit
We believe in the sovereignty of God - sovereign over all creation, sovereign over the affairs of men, sovereign over salvation
We believe in the authority of the Bible - Scripture alone is the Word of God
We are Biblical in our theology - we are a bible teaching church
We believe that the Church is not a building or a denomination but a people - those who are truly in Christ and embrace the truths that were embraced and confessed by the New Testament Church, the apostolic church.
We are evangelical - we believe that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
We are a Vertical Church - we believe that all true worship and living is Vertical, God directed and for the glory of God alone.
Scripture Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Christ Alone, For the glory of God alone - join us on Sundays
Grace alone - Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not of works, so that no one may boast.
Let us worship God
Call to Worship - Psalm 29:1-4, 9-11
Psalm 29 (LSB)
A Psalm of David. 1 Ascribe to Yahweh, O sons of the mighty, Ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to Yahweh the glory of His name; Worship Yahweh in the splendor of holiness. 3 The voice of Yahweh is upon the waters; The God of glory thunders, Yahweh is over many waters. 4 The voice of Yahweh is powerful, The voice of Yahweh is full of splendor.9 The voice of Yahweh makes the deer to calve And strips the forests bare; And in His temple everything says, “Glory!” 10 Yahweh sat enthroned over the flood; Indeed, Yahweh sits as King forever. 11 Yahweh will give strength to His people; Yahweh will bless His people with peace.
Scripture Reading - Romans 5:1-5
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we boast in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only this, but we also boast in our afflictions, knowing that affliction brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not put to shame, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Introduction: Romans 5:1 The 5 Benefits of Justification part 1
I have a question that I think relates to our message this morning but you’re probably going to think that I’m crazy.
Here it is: what’s heavier, a pound of nails or a pound of feathers?
It feels like we’re zooming through Romans and we’re already at chapter 5. Some people answer so quickly that they get the answer wrong.
But if we go through this chapter too fast we’re going to miss the “weight” of these verses.
I love the first five verses of this chapter. They are some of the best verses in the Bible
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
(1) It is the only way to have peace with God
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
The only way to have peace with God is through justification by faith
Justified: To be declared righteous, to be declared not guilty, to be declared free of condemnation. This can only be done by faith.
And so Paul begins chapter 5 with “therefore”. When you see a therefore, you have to ask, what is it there for?
Therefore - based on the first 4 chapters
The gospel, which is the good news of Christ’s coming, Christ’s life of sinlessness, Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, it alone is the power of God for salvation.
And this salvation is by faith from first to last
We cannot be justified by our nation of birth, our good works, or even our religious actions
It is by faith - our spiritually dead hearts must be made alive by the Holy Spirit and once able to believe we must profess our faith in Christ
Therefore, being justified by faith - we (everyone who believes), we (there are no exceptions) have peace with God
(2) It is the peace of reconciliation and restoration and not restfulness
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
I think this is the key part of this verse and I believe the context of everything Paul has said and will say in Romans is based upon our understanding of the word peace
What has Paul said?
In the first 4 chapters Paul makes it clear that we are under the looming judgment of God and the verdict is fatal. We are guilty and deserve only the wrath of God
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
In Romans 3:17
17 And the path of peace they have not known.”
In the next 12 chapters Paul will continue to show us that God is at war with a sinful world
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
While we were still sinners
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
7 because the mind set on the flesh is at enmity toward God, for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so,
Our sinful minds are at war with God - we hate God
The peace that is mentioned here is the peace of reconciliation. We are reconciled to God.
It is the peace of restoration. What was lost in the garden has been restored, spiritual life has been created.
Make no mistake, while we may now have the peace of restfulness, it is because we are no longer at war with God and God’s wrath is no longer looming over us.
This is the peace of God - through Christ you are receiving God’s love and not God’s wrath
(3) It is the uncopiable peace of Christ
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
What does the word uncopiable mean? It means that the peace of Christ is matchless. It is one of a kind. Nothing compares, everything falls short.
As Jesus tells us:
27 “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.
This brings us back to the meaning of peace in this verse
A vacation can be peaceful
A nap can be restful
A babysitter and a night out can be rejuvenating
But the world cannot stop the war that is raging between a holy God and guilty sinners
The world cannot take away your guilt, the world cannot create peace in the Middle East let alone peace between guilty sinners and a holy God.
This is something only the one who is called the Prince of Peace is able to do and the Prince of Peace is Jesus
Have you made your peace with God?
May the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, comfort you in all your afflictions, so that you may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which you yourself have been comforted by God. Amen.
