Happy Valentines Sunday!
I have a simple question for everyone this morning. Who here has a mom and dad?
You my friends are there result of your mom and dad and you are not an accident! The first part of Jeremiah 1:5 says
Jeremiah 1:5a NASB95
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
Let me throw some numbers at you that I think are pretty amazing…
You are here because of 2 Parents
4 grandparents
8 great-grandparents
16 second great-grandparents
32 third great-grandparents
64 fourth great-grandparents
128 fifth great-grandparents
256 sixth great-grandparents
512 seventh great-grandparents
1024 eight great-grandparents
2048 ninth great-grandparents
For you to be born from 12 previous generations you needed a total of 4,094 ancestors over the last 400 years to get you here. You were not an accident an there was a lot of love, struggles, battles, difficulties, sadness, and happiness over all the generations that developed the DNA that is you.
What is even more amazing is God before time began knew you and saw you. He knew you would be here today at this very moment listening to what I am saying right now.
Wow! What an amazing God we serve.
That brings us to the Fifth commandment. Let’s read it together. Exodus 20:12
Exodus 20:12 NASB95
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
As we continue to study the Ten Commandments, I want you to notice a progression. We are stated the first four commandments are our vertical relationship with God and the last 6 are our horizontal relationship with man.
But I want you to notice something else as it relates to our enemy Satan.
Satan will attack everything God holds, dear. He will attack God’s being, His worship, His name, and the rest He gives us. (This is the First Four Commandments)
Satan also focuses his attacks on the family, honor your Father and Mother, Do not commit adultery. (This is the Fifth and Seventh Commandments)
If that were not enough he then targets our character by encouraging murder, stealing, he promotes lying, and he wants to be unsatisfied with want we have. (The sixth, and 8-10th commandments)
Satan hate everything God stands for and everything God has created. That’s you and me. 1 Peter 5:8, reminds us how vicious he is.
1 Peter 5:8 NASB95
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
As we study the fifth commandment, which is to honor your father and your mother, understand Satan knows if he is successful in disrupting the parent child relationship, it not only affects this commandment but there is a trickle-down effect to our view of God and the first 4 commandments.
When we do not honor the authority given to us called mom and dad, by default we also are not honoring the authority of God.
Let’s look at the verse one more time… Exodus 20:12
Exodus 20:12 NASB95
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
The word honor means “to treat with significance” or to show respect towards.
Honor = to treat with significance or to show respect towards.
There are two things I want you to notice about this word honor.
It is commanded without an age limit attached to it. In other words, you do not outgrow this commandment.
It is open-ended meaning there is no is no out or prerequisite.
Therefore, all our dealings with mom and dad are to be characterized by respect, esteem, having regard for them, and showing affection towards them.
What happens when we do not honor our mom and dad?
We don’t fully grasp the importance of this command like we should. When we do not honor our parents is the beginning of the end of a society.
Authoritarian structures such as totalitarian governments and religious cults all seek to remove the vital role of the family as the primary social unit. These systems all ultimately seek to reject parental authority in the interest of a higher authority represented by the state or the religious values in question.
Think about what has happened in our nation over the past several years. Schools are taking authority away from parents as if they have the answers for our children and we do not.
Think Nazi Germany, they removed children from parents to indoctrinate them.
Micah shows us how when this commandment is violated it leads to chaos and disintegration of a society.
Micah 7:6 NASB95
For son treats father contemptuously, Daughter rises up against her mother, Daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; A man’s enemies are the men of his own household.
Did you know today studies show 27% of Americans are currently estranged from a relative.
There are many here today who have experienced being cut off from their children for one reason or another.
Perhaps you have cut off one of your parents, can I gently tell you to stop and honor them the way the Bible commands us too?
Many kids today feel as though they have a right to dishonor their parents
They speak ill of their parents to others James 4:11
James 4:11 NASB95
Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it.
They will cut them off because they have a different belief system or different political view. Rom 13:1
Romans 13:1 NASB95
Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.
They blame their upbringing claiming they were abused Gal 6:5, (Message version of this verse is easier to understand)
Galatians 6:5 MSG
Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.
you may have been abused, and I am not making light of that, but God says we are still to honor our parents, despite the way we were raised.
Those who are still in the home purposely disobey their parents Eph. 6:1,
Ephesians 6:1 NASB95
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
notice it says “in the Lord” the only exception is if mom and dad are commanding you to commit sin, then don’t obey them, obey God instead.
Disobedience and a lack of honor for parents is a sign of end times. 2 Tim. 3:2
2 Timothy 3:2 NASB95
For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,
If any of these are you… STOP IT!
As Jerry Vines has said, “Show me a nation where there is disobedience to parents, and I will show you a nation whose foundations are crumbling.”
The lack of honoring a person’s parents stems from a lack of honor of authority. What we do not realize is when we are not honoring our parents we are not honoring God.
What happens when we honor our mom and dad?
Exodus 20:12 NASB95
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
Ephesians 6:2 NASB95
Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise),
Does this guarantee we will live long? No. God was telling Israel, listen honor your parents and you will live long in the land. The idea, is if we are honoring parents then we are honoring God. But when we do not honor our parents sin is at our door and we will begin doing what is not right before the the Lord.
While we are not guaranteed long life in honoring our parents there is a principle here.
Obedience certainly can prolong our lives.
I don’t know how many times I would have probably killed or seriously hurt myself had it not been for simple obedience to my mom and dad.
When Mom and Dad say no, it is generally for a good reason so we need to obey.
Proverbs is replete with verse of the importance of obedience to parents and much of it is to keep us out of trouble. Prov 6:20-21
Proverbs 6:20–21 NASB95
My son, observe the commandment of your father And do not forsake the teaching of your mother; Bind them continually on your heart; Tie them around your neck.
What are ways we can honor our mom and dad?
(Picture of Mom and Dad)
I got the privilege of celebrating my dad’s 85th birthday this last Friday. I was able to honor Him by simply showing up and telling him how much I love him.
We honor them with our mouths… speak kindly to them and about them. Prov 16:24
Proverbs 16:24 NASB95
Pleasant words are a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
We honor them by taking care of them when they are old. The heart of this command is not so much obedience to mom and dad as kids, but taking care of them as they age. Prov 23:22
Proverbs 23:22 NASB95
Listen to your father who begot you, And do not despise your mother when she is old.
Leviticus 19:32 NASB95
‘You shall rise up before the grayheaded and honor the aged, and you shall revere your God; I am the Lord.
Since I have been here I have seen…
Ms Paula be a perfect example of this. Thank you for how you honored your mother.
Brenda did this for her mom. Thank you for honoring your mother
Jim and Eve are honoring Ms Lillie Mae. Thank you.
Edwina and Donald are honoring her dad. Thank you.
I know there are others of you who have and are honoring their parents by looking after them… Thank you.
You all are a beautiful example of keeping the 5th commandment.
Jesus the creator and our example of how to live life, obeyed His mom and dad, showed honor to them.
As a child He submitted to them in obedience.
Luke 2:51 NASB95
And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart.
As an adult He made sure His mother would be taken care of.
John 19:26–27 NASB95
When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.
When we honor our mom and dad we are honoring God, for it is God who gave us our parents and it is God who has commanded us to honor them.
Let’s Pray.
