John 1:1–5 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”

Introduction

John starts his account of Jesus’ life with the words In the Beginning…
He does not start his gospel like Matthew who introduces the genealogy of Jesus.
He doesn’t start like Mark, who introduces the ministry of John the Baptist.
He doesn’t start like Luke who addresses the gospel as a letter to Theopholus.
He starts just like Moses started when he penned the book of Genesis…in the beginning.
The word he uses for beginning is arche’ in the Greek. Which translates as the beginning but also has the deeper meaning of the source of action.
I can imagine John looking back from his starting point where Moses said “In the beginning God created...” and John saying He is the creator.

Main Point 1 - The Purpose of the Logos

Jesus is identified by many names throughout the Bible. John calls Him the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Isaiah says He is wonderful, counselor, the mighty God, and the Prince of Peace. Jesus even goes so far as to ask His disciples who they thought He was. Peter replied, you are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. But none of the names they called Him or even what we call Him…the morning star, the Great I am, the kinsman redeemer, the lily of the valley…none of those names truly capture the essence of His nature like John’s revelation. John calls Jesus the Logos

Main Point 2 - The Power of the Logos

It is in the beginning that we can see the atmosphere change chaos into creation!
[Point to the chaos that occurs in our life and Jesus’ ability to restore]
Thru Him all things were made and without Him nothing was made that has been made.
It is in the moment of chaos that God creates. And when He creates He uses a rhema word.
The difference between the logos and the rhema is that the logos is the expression of thought for the person making it. A rhema is a spoken command or decree that a person makes.
So when God said, let there Be light, He spoke a rhema word that broke through chaos.
Blind Bartimaues - Mark 10:52 “And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.”
Peace Be still - Mark 4:39 “And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”
Matthew 28:18 “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”
When the Logos spoke a rhema word, something was released in the atmosphere.
But the people of God have the ability to speak a rhema to change the atmosphere. This is why Jesus said in Luke 10:19 “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

Main Point 3 - The Promise of the Logos

When God said let there be light, John counters with Jesus is the light of mankind.
When Moses says and God separated the light from the darkness, John counters with the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.
