Proverbs 1:2-7 (ESV)
2To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of
insight,
3to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice,
and equity;
4to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to
the youth—
5Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who
understands obtain guidance,
6to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and
their riddles.
7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools
despise wisdom and instruction.

1 Kings 3:5–9 (ESV) At Gibeon the LORD appeared to
Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, “Ask what I
6
7
shall give you.” And Solomon said, . . .“ And now, O
LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of
David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not
9
know how to go out or come in. . . . Give your servant
therefore an understanding [lit. insightful] mind to
govern [lit. judge] your people, that I may discern
between good and evil [lit. to have insight to judge
between good and bad], for who is able to govern [lit.
judge] this your great people?”
1 Kings 3:10–12 (ESV) It pleased the LORD that
11
Solomon had asked this. And God said to him,
“Because you have asked this, and have not asked
for yourself long life or riches or the life of your
enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding
to discern what is right [lit. to have insight to hear
12
judgement], behold, I now do according to your
word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind
[lit. heart], so that none like you has been before you
and none like you shall arise after you.
1 Kings 3:28 (ESV) And all Israel
heard of the judgment that the king
had rendered, and they stood in
awe of the king, because they
perceived that the wisdom of God
was in him to do justice.
1 Kings 10:6–9 (ESV) And she [the Queen of
Sheba] said to the king, “The report was true
that I heard in my own land of your words
7
and of your wisdom, but I did not believe
the reports until I came and my own eyes had
seen it. And behold, the half was not told me.
Your wisdom and prosperity surpass the
9b
report that I heard. . . . Because the LORD
loved Israel forever, he has made you king,
that you may execute justice and
righteousness.”
Leviticus 19:35–36 (ESV) “You shall do no
wrong in judgment [lit. justice], in measures
36
of length or weight or quantity. You shall
have just [lit. righteous] balances, just [lit.
righteous] weights, a just [lit. righteous]
ephah, and a just [lit. righteous] hin: I am the
LORD your God, who brought you out of the
land of Egypt.
Psalm 9:7–8 (ESV) But the LORD sits enthroned
forever; he has established his throne for justice,
8and he judges the world with righteousness; he
judges the peoples with uprightness [ translated
equity in Proverbs 1:3].

righteousness, in the paths of justice,

be partial to the wicked or to deprive
the righteous of justice.

are sayings of the wise. Partiality
in judging [lit. judgment] is not
good.
Proverbs 19:1 (ESV) Better is a poor
person who walks in his integrity than
one who is crooked in speech and is a
fool.
Proverbs 28:6 (ESV) Better is a poor
man who walks in his integrity than a
rich man who is crooked in his ways.
Please turn to Proverbs 10.
Romans 6:15–16 (ESV) What then? Are we to
sin because we are not under law but under
16
grace? By no means!
Do you not know that
if you present yourselves to anyone as
obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one
whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to
death, or of obedience, which leads to
righteousness?
Romans 6:18 (ESV) and, having
been set free from sin, [we] have
become slaves of righteousness.
Ephesians 4:22–24 (ESV) to put off

God in true righteousness and
holiness.
fi
Ephesians 4:25–29 (ESV) Therefore, having put away
falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with
his neighbor, for we are members one of another.
26Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go
down on your anger, 27and give no opportunity to
the devil. 28Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let
him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so
that he may have something to share with anyone in
need. 29Let no corrupting talk come out of your
mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as
ts the occasion, that it may give grace to those who
hear.

wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil,
19a false witness who breathes out lies, and one
who sows discord among brothers.
