My name is Noah Torres and for this discussion post I am discussing Augustine’s rule of faith.
A key element of Augustine’s process of exegesis and theology is the rule of faith. The rule of faith is a description or summary of one’s doctrine that is fixed and fluid on context. Augustine’s rule of faith held true to three central doctrines: First the doctrine of God, second the doctrine of Christ and third the doctrine of humanity. The way he is able to work through these doctrines is on the grounds of scripture as scripture is the foundation for his thinking. He believed that scripture communicates how we are to think about God and ourselves. Without scripture, there is no way we can learn about who God is and we live to honor him.
The rule of faith impacts the interpretation of scripture in a way that it may steer someone closer to the truth of scripture or further from it. Augustine saw theology as something that depended on the word of God. His rule of faith implied the necessity of scripture because it was only through scripture where He could learn the truth about God. If my own rule of faith was dependent on experience, every thought I would have about God would not be scriptural and if I was not scriptural, then my thinking of God would be incorrect. The way we think about God is important as Augustine said Himself, If the doctrine of God is not right, then nothing can be right.
