Friedrich Nietzsche
famously said, “He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does
not become a monster… for when you gaze long into the abyss the abyss also
gazes into you.”
The Christian walk often feels like a constant war. We fight the indwelling sin
of this broken and dying body. We fight against all the idols this world tries
to ensnare us with. We also know that we
fight against the devil and his forces. It will bring us face to face with the
many monsters that surround us. This evening, I want to encourage and equip us
all for this battle.
Need
We must be equipped for this battle, lest we become the very things we fight against.
Let us not grow weary and doing well. Let us strive forward to keep the faith
and run the face God has set before us.
Topic
This evening, we will see the damage of uncontrolled sin in our lives.
Referent
We will see the cost of our uncontrolled sin in Genesis 6:1-8.

Sermon in a sentence:
Uncontrolled sin will lead to worldliness and God’s judgement.
*Read Genesis 6:1-8 and Pray*
Genesis 3:15.
Genesis 4; Cain and Abel rivalry
Genesis 4; Cain’s Lineage
Genesis 5; Seth’s Lineage
Moses continues to draw the contrast between the seed of Adam and Eve’s sons. Both lineages use some
of the same or similar names: Enoch, Lamech; Methushael, and Methuselah.
Enoch is connected with a city in Cain’s line but Enoch walks with God in Seth’s
line.
Lamech, the seventh in his lineage, is the first polygamist and second to commit fratricide.
Enoch, the seventh in his lineage, walks with the Lord in such a way that the
Lord takes him.
Lamech in Seth’s line appears to have faith in the Lord by his
reason for naming his son Noah.
Cain’s line does not have any ages, but Seth’s
line is marked by their extraordinary lifespans.
Uncontrolled Sin Leads To Worldliness
Uncontrolled Sin Leads To Worldliness
The “sons of God” multiplied on the face of the earth like they should have done - Genesis 1:28
28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
John Calvin
In short, Moses points it out as the most extreme disorder; when the sons of the pious, whom God had separated to himself from others, as a peculiar and hidden treasure, became degenerate.
vs 2- Notice the way the sin is described. “saw” “attractive” and “took”
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
vs. 3 - Those that were once called the “sons of God” will no longer abide in God’s presence.
vs. 5 - They were supposed to be sons of God but their hearts identified who they really were.
Brothers and sisters, we must take their example
as a warning. We come to church, and we claim the title sons and daughters of
God. However, do we live like God has adopted us and made us his very own? Do
we want that title but not the responsibility? I do not mean to make you question
your salvation. I mean to ask you to examine yourselves. Cut out any sin in
your life now while it is still young. Do not let uncontrolled sin take root in
your life.
The Apostle Paul reminds us that sin is never content to stay as it is. It will also ask for more, take more, and cost more. (Romans 1:18) “men suppress the truth in unrighteousness.” And “God gave them up in the lust of their hearts to impurity…” (Romans 1:23).
By the grace of God and the power of the Lord
Jesus Christ, kill your sin. Save yourselves from more heartache and suffering
in the future. God will give you up to your uncontrolled sin you and you will
be just like the world.
Uncontrolled Sin Leads To Judgement
Uncontrolled Sin Leads To Judgement
Man’s unrepentant sin is so wicked that it grieves the very heart of God to the point of regret.
We can’t fully understand that on this side of heaven.
God’s judgement is not just on man but on creation itself.
God punishes humans for their sins! God’s justice demands it!
All of creation is affected by our sin.
Cyclones to cancer
Terrorism to taxes
As a Christian, we should be thankful that God brings judgement. God uses judgement as a means of repentance. This is why abuse and reporting is so beneficial.
in the Christian life we want God’s discipline not his judgement.
vs. 8 - But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
There is no hope for anyone outside of the grace of God. In the person and work of Jesus Christ, we can be saved the power of sin in our lives and the judgement of God.
Just as God delivered Noah and his family through the flood waters, God offers us salvation through the washing away of our sins by the blood of Jesus Christ.
Conclusion
Conclusion
The Dark Knight - Harvey Dent (Two Face) says, “You either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain.” Starting well is easy, its how you finish.
I want us to look at ourselves. We bear the name of Christ. Do we represent him?
Application
Application
Put your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Become a child of God. Find hope to fight against your sin and be saved from God’s judgement.
Guard what you see this week. Whether that is on the soap opera and drama on the tv. Or doom scrolling on facebook. Or the strip club. This passages is centered around how costly uncontrolled sin is. In this case, uncontrolled sexual sin. It will leave worldly and under God’s judgement. Remind yourself this week anytime some catches your eyes you will say, “I am a son or daughter of God.”
