Hymn #
Hymn #
Background:
When this Psalm was composed it was not necessary for us to know, since true faith is always in season, and is usually under trial.” - Spurgeon.
Is there ever smooth sailing. It just seems like life can be relentless.
Sorrowful yet rejoicing.
The week ends, the week begins.
Levitical musician who—along with Asaph and Heman oversaw music in the temple.
Jeduthun was a member and father of a Levitical family of temple musicians.
1 Chron. 16:41 With them were Heman and Jeduthun and the rest of those chosen and expressly named to give thanks to the Lord, for his steadfast love endures forever.
The Hebrew word “AK” - only or alone (Restrictive) - and (Assertive - truly, surely).
Only or alone.
Exclusivity of God meeting our needs. We look to so many other things.
Do you ever have a lot to do and feel incompetent to do them? (Preparing for this)…
2 Corinthians 2:16 ESV
16 …Who is sufficient for these things?
2 Corinthians 3:5–6 ESV
5 Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, 6 who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
Psalm 62 ESV
To the choirmaster: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. 1 For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. 2 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. 3 How long will all of you attack a man to batter him, like a leaning wall, a tottering fence? 4 They only plan to thrust him down from his high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. Selah 5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. 6 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. 7 On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. 8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah 9 Those of low estate are but a breath; those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath. 10 Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart on them. 11 Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God, 12 and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For you will render to a man according to his work.
Hymn # - My Faith has Found a Resting Place
Hymn # 350 - Tis So Sweet To Trust

We live by faith alone (1-4)

Psalm 62:1–4 ESV
1 For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. 2 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. 3 How long will all of you attack a man to batter him, like a leaning wall, a tottering fence? 4 They only plan to thrust him down from his high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. Selah
When life happens, it is always happening, we live by faith alone. He says somethign true.
V1 - Only - to God - silence - my soul.
The position of the word “Only” demonstrates two things (1) there are many things competing for our attention and (2) Exclusivity of God to satisfy us.
The Lord is my portion. Psalm 16:5
Asaph says it - Psalm 73:26
Jeremiah says it - Lamentations 3:24
everything in this world, even the good things are rivals for our trust and assurcane that only God can give.
Silence - not a absense of noise but a quiet restfulness of soul. (May that takes work when so much around us is clamoring and clanging for our attention.)
That is why Paul tells Timothy to “Fight the good fight of faith.”
1 Tim. 6:12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
2 Tim. 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
These are very active words. Faith is something you have to fight for. It doesn’t come natural or easy. It won’t come to us without a fight.
Silence is a “composed submission,” “bowing to sovereingty” “supresses every inward murmur of dissatisfaction.” - Calvin
That is what silence is. Man it can can be exhausting.
Lam. 3:26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
V2. - begins with (AK) alone -
Rock (firm) / Salvation (yesh·oo·aw) (deliverance) / fortress (stronghold) - when you in need of a strong hold? When you are in trouble.
Psalm 9:9 The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
“i will not be greatly shaken” - stubborn security. (I might fall but i will get up).
3-4 - we aren’t immune from problems - (Broken record -say this often). This is why trust is so badly needed. (3-4).
That is what some of these Psalms have become so popular because they scratch where we itch. This isn’t pie in the sky optimism. This is meeting us in the mudpits of life and reminding us what is true.
How long? - unrelenting and he is ready for it to end.
Batter - repeatedly (Battering ram - it takes multiple hits to topple the wall) - heavy and force and momentum. striking you. OUCH.
leaning and tottering - breaking point - point of collapse
“Evil is ruthlessly competitive, is attracted to weakness, to give a last push to whatever is leaning and tottering.” - Kidner.
v4 - deliberate, premeditated hatred. (Only)
“They” delight in falsehood - opposition to God.
Selah - pause and think about this. restfulness of faith vrs. the constant pressure of being attacked by evil forces.
Hymn # 26 - A Mighty Fortress is Our God
Hymn # -

Remind Yourself that You Live by Faith Alone. (5-8).

Psalm 62:5–8 ESV
5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. 6 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. 7 On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. 8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah
v. 5 - feels like we have read this before but there is a subtle amendment and difference.
v1 is the Psalmist declaring something true about himself to others, now he is saying it to himself.
This makes all the difference when we personalize the faith we profess.
It takes it from abstract and theoretical and from existing in a vaccumed state to in the moment and real time.
I had to fight that as I was preparing this message.)
He starts talking to his soul.
exhorts himself to actually live out the faith he professes to have in verses 1-4.
Talk about practical.
We need to constantly remind ourselves who were are and whose we are. (importance of reading and the preaching the word of God to ourselves and others. (we need fellowship to do this as well.) - importance of gatherings like theses…but we can’t always exist among other people. alone a lot of the day and there are competing voices that we must silence.
“Only - to God be silent - my soul.” (Only listen to God soul of mine.).
Another variation is the exchange of the word “salvation” from vrs.1 to “hope” in verse 5.
HOPE -
When we live with biblical hope, we have an anchored life. We are held steady in the midst of any storm. Because hope is often misunderstood, an accurate understanding of the meaning of hope is crucial.
Hope identified as cultural hope is merely an optimistic desire that something will be fulfilled. This hope is not a guaranteed hope because it is subject to changeable people and circumstances.
Hope identified as Christian hope is an optimistic assurance that something will be fulfilled. This hope is a guaranteed hope not subject to change, but rather anchored in our unchangeable Savior and Lord.
Hope in the New Testament is conveyed by the Greek word elpis, which means a “favorable and confident expectation” relating to the future.
Although the Bible uses the word hope in both the secular and the spiritual sense, the focus of our Christian hope is always based on the guaranteed promises of God.
Thus, this hope will never be a disappointment. As Christians, we are promised peace with God.
“We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” (Romans 5:3–5)
Peter does not mean “wishful thinking” here. Wishful thinking won’t sustain you when your life is on the line, or your families lives are on the line, but “biblical hope” will.
Peter uses, the Greek noun elpis
ἐλπίς: a joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation.
“Thrill of Hope a weary world rejoices, yonder breaks a new a glorious morn.”
v7 - begins and ends with God.
v 8 - now he addresses us. the people.
What he models he now exhorts others to do.
Trust in Him at all times. (when? all times - how applicable is that. if you are ever wondering when you should trust in him. Remember me saying this to you know. ALWAYS. I am just repeating what David said to himself and others.
ALWAYS
It is not helpful for me to tell you to “trust God.” I also need to tell you “how” to do that. You do that by pouring out the contents of your heart to him.
How - pour out your heart. If you want it cleaned up you got to pour out the contents.
Spread out all your troubles, anxieties, sadnesses, hopes, fears.
Hebrews 5:7 ESV
7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
Whatever it is throw it in a pile before him. Come right out with it. and all of it. whatever it is. out with everything. don’t dribble your requests, pour them out.
He is a refuge. that means he is a safe space.
SELAH.
Hymn # - 406 - My Hope is In the Lord
Hymn # - O Hly Night.

Why should we do what we have been told? (9-12)

Psalm 62:9–12 ESV
9 Those of low estate are but a breath; those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath. 10 Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart on them. 11 Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God, 12 and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For you will render to a man according to his work.
Where else are you going to turn?
are but a breath (only a breath)
delusion - can’t perform what they promise
vanity.
Jeremiah 17:5–8 ESV
5 Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
“in the balances they go up” - think of a scale (if you are lighter than a breath…whatever you are weighed against will certainly outway you.
No substance. No certaining. No weigntness. No help.
Don’t foolishly trust in the lightweights. Even yourself. You are a light weight.
Have you ever expereinced that? Have you ever tried to reason with yourself? It doesn’t work? At some point you will find a hole in your argument.
That is why you have to pour your heart out out to Him.
v 10 - power and wealth don’t help (two things that promise but can’t deliver).
Once / twice is and expression of emphasis not numerical value (he didn’t really hear this twice, but he heard what he heard LOUD and CLEAR.
What is louder and clearer than everthing that this competing for His attention and that is offering him vain help?
God is powerful - more powerful.
God is merciful (chesed) - committed loyal love.
He will reward covenant faithfulness and wil puish covenant disopbedince.
Jesus did this.
Pour out our hearts to him. ALONE
Consider how safe you really are in Him.
live faithfully toward him.
