It was in the days of the judging of the judges, and it was that a famine was in the land and a man walked from Bethlehem of Judah by sojourning in a field of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons.

And the man’s name was Elimelech and his wife’s name was Naomi and his two son’s names were Machlon and Cilion, Ephrathites from Bethlehem of Judah, and they entered the field of Moab and they stayed there.

Then Elimelech the husband of Naomi died, so she and her two sons remained.
