26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.
28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

Looking at the text tonight, what are some initial thoughts that you have?
What do we see John communicating here?
26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.
We see John talking about the tail end of our passage from last week
And what did we cover last week? If you could talk about detail by detail what do we go over?
We talked aboutFalse teachers, how to recognize false teachers, and the reality of not everyone who makes a mistake as a false teacher
But anyone who continues in false teaching, and then leaves the church or leaves sound. Doctrine is a false teacher.
But we also have this aspect of “and we know everything” Talking about those of us who are anointed
And what it means to be anointed is to have the Holy Spirit
In the Old Testament, they would pour oil as an anointing onto a king or a man, but in the world we live in today God pours out his holy Holy Spirit to dwell in us as our anointing
So John is writing to believers any contrast the false teacher with the anointing that believers have in the Holy Spirit
What are some attributes of the Holy Spirit that we think of?
What are evidence is that we have the Holy Spirit?
Often times we think of speaking or teaching ability
Healing tongues or miraculous things of that nature
But the reality is the presence of the Holy Spirit produces faithfulness, It produces peace, It produces joy,
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
These are the things that are produced by the Holy Spirit
When we abide in Christ, we have this connection to where his spirit flows through us and produces in us good fruit
So if we are anointed, that means God’s spirit abide in us
And the signs of that are obedience, not perfect obedience, but loving obedience
This comes from a relationship with the father
So a question for us is do we see the anointing of the Holy Spirit in our lives
Meaning, do we see the work in the presence of the Holy Spirit in our heart in our mind?
Do we see him growing us impatience growing us in love growing us enjoy growing us in understanding
The Holy Spirit will work in us if we are a part of Christ
And if we don’t have that anointing, we don’t have a relationship with Christ
But if we do have it, we will see some results when it comes to our discernment between truth and false teaching
27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.
What do you see in this section?
What are some things that stand out to you?
What are some keywords/Sentences in this passage that you see?
This anointing the Holy Spirit abide in you and me meaning he lives with us the same way that when a branch is connected to the vine, the water flows passing nutrients throughout the whole plant
In the same way, that life force that holy spirit anointing flows and abide within us, we are connected to God through the Holy Spirit because of Jesus and sacrifice
And we see John make the claim his anointing teaches us about everything and you have no need that anyone should teach you
What do you think this means?
Does this mean we’re not supposed to have teachers?
Well, no
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
What John is trying to explain to us is that when we have this in dwelling of the Holy Spirit it interprets and helps us to understand scripture
It helps us to understand truth
And discern lies
Teachers are called to help further reveal and show truth, but the reality is if a teacher is not revealing and showing truth and is revealing and showing lies and passing them off as if they were truth
Then this anointing this in dwelling, the abiding of the Holy Spirit should cause a light to flash in our head saying no that’s wrong
That’s not what the Bible teaches
The Holy Spirit teaches us what’s true and false, and we learned that through its interpretation of its own word which is the Bible
God’s written and inspired word
When a believer reach the scripture they’re able to understand and see the connections of the gospel
But when an unbeliever reads scripture, they lost confused and don’t understand
A mentor of mine before he knew Christ would read his Bible and it just wouldn’t make any sense to him. He tried to understand it, but it just was confusing and dumb, but then when the Holy Spirit came into his life and he was saved and anointed, he picked up the Bible, and it was as if he could understand it for the first time.
This is what John is communicating that when we have this in dwelling, we can now understand truth and lies
That we have no need for a teacher to tell us what the Bible means in the sense that if we didn’t have a teacher, we would still have the Holy Spirit who’s able to teach us
But if we have a teacher who also has the Holy Spirit, they are able to teach us and that’s what we see in Ephesians
So we must abide in the spirit and the spirit must abide in us so that we can have understanding of God’s word and we must walk and obedience so that that understanding doesn’t get separated from us
Because when we’re distracted or controlled by sin, the Holy Spirit teaching start starts to become muted and hard to hear
But as James says if we draw nearer to God, he will draw nearer to us
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
We see Jen repeating over and over again abide so as a believer what’s an active way for us to abide in Christ?
What are some examples of abiding in our world today apart from scripture?
Abiding can be like a marriage when you abide in the same household and spend your lives together
Overtime spouse is tend to act think and talk like their partner because they abide together the you become one
And it’s the same way with the Holy Spirit and with God that when we abide in a relationship with him, we begin to look more and more like him and less and less like the world
Is this perfect is this complete? No it’s sanctification, but God will continue to work on our hearts and minds.
In verse 28 we see John repeat this again abide…
28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.
What are y’all thinking about this passage? What do you see here?
1 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. 5 As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. 6 But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ 7 Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12 But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.
When I was a kid, I remember my parents would go out on a date or go out for the evening and say hey do the dishes before I get home or do your chores clean the house whatever
And I would respond, of course yeah I’m sure I’ll take care of it and then me and my siblings will go play video games and then we’d see our parents that start to drive up the driveway hours later and realize nothing had been done
So we begin to scramble and try to get it done as quick as possible, in order to avoid being embarrassed or getting in trouble
But we didn’t get our butts into gear or step into action until we realized our parents return was imminent
And I want to understand Jesus’s return is imminent. Any day could happen at any point.
Now we don’t operate in fear, but we operate in hope
Hope that we can do as much for the Lord as possible and operate in righteousness when he returns
Hope that we can share the gospel with as many people as possible before he returns
Because he could return any day
29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.
Now this aspect of righteousness, we see here starts with the qualifier of if you know that he is righteous
Again, talking about us understanding, Jesus is holding us understanding that he has set apart that he is fully God fully perfect
And then he says, and if we know his righteousness, we know that whoever practices righteousness has been born of him
This isn’t saying perfection this is saying doing what is right in the eyes of God practicing that
In the beginning is repenting and believing in Jesus as the beginning of our righteousness
Is recognizing that we are poor in spirit we are spiritually bankrupt, but Jesus has given us his righteousness
And he is good enough for us
And because of that because of our belief because of his sacrifice and our relationship with him, we can now walk and practice living his righteousness
Because we have been born of him
And reality is once you are born, you can’t be unborn
We’re born into this world, but when we become a Christian when we repent and believe and trust in God, genuinely then we are born again, and there’s no way to reverse that because we are in God’s hand
So practical thoughts for us is are we practicing righteousness?
Have we put our faith in Christ as our savior?
Have we said Lord, I agreed that my sin is wrong and that your way is righteous and I ask that you would forgive me and that you would free me for my sin
If we can confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead We will be saved
And if we have started that first step and righteousness, are we practicing the righteousness of Christ?
Are we doing the things that he did talking the way he did acting the way he did
Because if we’re born of him, we will try to be like him
When you see a kid hanging out with his dad like let’s think of his son and his dad
And he sees his dad he loves his dad. He adores his dad. He’s been born of his dad.
And now he wants to act like his dad be like his dad and live like his dad
There’s a song by Rodney Atkins that talks about his son watching him
His son seeing his dad as a hero, but he wants to emulate. He wants to grow big and strong and be just like his dad.
And as Christians that should be our desire as well, not out of fear, but out of love and adoration for our father, who is God
We want to walk in the same way that he walked
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
