v. 17 |
Linking verse 16 and the way of righteous vs. wicked to how a person responds to instruction. We can view the following verses for whether or not a person has followed the path of wisdom
Heed - Follow, keep.
Instruction - both from the wise ones in life as well as biblical instruction.
Reproof - a disagreement for the reason of progress.
Both our words as well as our example can lead others off of the path.
v. 18 |
False speech - three categories mentioned in 18 and 19.
Conceals hatred - acting like you like someone when you don’t.
Slander - unfavorable saying, about another person, that which is not true.
v. 19 |
To speak to too much gives the opportunity to say what is unhelfpul whether it is false or unkind.
An example of saying too much to meet your own needs. Job 32:18-20
For I am full of words; the spirit within me constrains me. Behold, my belly is like wine that has no vent; like new wineskins ready to burst. I must speak, that I may find relief; I must open my lips and answer.

One result of choosing when to speak is that our words will be more highly valued than if we blather on constantly.
A reminder that our words are shaped by our character.
That which is said by the wicked has little worth.
v. 21 |
The words of the righteous will be desired by others as if it were a nourishing meal.
That which is said by the fool will be ignored and they will bring about their own demise.
