One of the biggest questions that we need to ask and answer as Christians is:
Who is Jesus?
There are very few people who actually believe He didn’t exist at all simply because the evidence is just too overwhelming. You have to explain away 2,000 years of church history by stating that a group of people died for a lie.
A lot of people think he was a great teacher or wise man.
Even Muslims believe He was one of the great prophets sent by God to tell people how to live.
But for Christians, it’s a different story.
Because for Christians, Jesus is God. And no, Jesus did not evolve over time in the minds of Christians to become God. He was believed to be God from the very beginning.
One of the earliest Christians writers, Paul, was very clear on this. The book of Colossians was written only a few years after Jesus was crucified. And it is one of the earliest witnesses to the belief that Jesus was more than just a mere man, he was God in the flesh.
That is the theme of our passage today.
Read: Col 1:15-23
Colossians 1:15–23 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. 21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
Jesus is the God of CREATION (15-17)
Jesus is the Lord of the CHURCH (18)
Jesus is the SAVIOR of the WORLD (19-23)
So what?
The Bible teaches us that Jesus is more than just a man. More than a good teacher. more than a friend.
It teaches us that Jesus Lord, God, Lord and Savior.
He taught this to HIs disciples who went and told the world. And most of them died for it.
So today, we are confronted with a claim that Jesus is God, Lord and Savior.
And we have to decide…do we believe it?
Because the truth is Jesus is either a lunatic, a liar, or Lord. His disciples didn’t think he was a lunatic or a liar. They were willing to die for their Lord.
How will we respond today?
Let’s pray.
