In Our Last Sermon

James instructs believers to call the elders for prayer and anointing during sickness, highlighting the importance of spiritual leadership and care within the local church. Anointing with oil is a symbolic act representing dependence on God's power and presence, not a ritual for automatic healing. Ungir con aceite es un acto simbólico que representa la dependencia del poder y la presencia de Dios, no un ritual para la sanidad automática.

As a church, we commit to following James' instructions by praying for the sick with compassion, trusting in God’s power to heal, restore, and forgive according to His will. James 5:16–18 “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.”

Let us come before the Lord in prayer

As we continue in our passage we shift from the role of elders and anointing to the broader call for every believer to live in a community of confession, prayer, and mutual support. James 5:16 “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

“therefore"”is a crucial connecting term that signals a logical conclusion, application, or in our case a response based on what was previously stated.

Because the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up; and if sins have been committed, they will be forgiven. Therefore, call to action.

as a matter of fact confession of sins happens in both the old covenant and the new covenant De hecho, la confesión de los pecados ocurre tanto en el antiguo pacto como en el nuevo.

In the old covenant we see /

Proverbs 28:13 “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”

There is no profit, nor is there any prospering in our spiritual life as a church, as a body, as an individual when we conceal our sin.

Psalm 32:3-5 is a powerful passage where David reflects on the burden of unconfessed sin and the freedom found in repentance. He describes the physical and spiritual distress he experienced when he kept silent about his sin, but also the relief and forgiveness he received when he confessed it to God

Psalm 32:3–5 “For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah”

As well as in the New Covenant, the confession of sin takes place.

1 John 1:8-10 emphasizes the importance of honesty about our sin and the assurance of God's forgiveness.

1 John 1:8–9“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 Juan 1:8-9 enfatiza la importancia de la honestidad acerca de nuestro pecado y la seguridad del perdón de Dios.

John warns us against deceiving ourselves,— reminding us that denying our sin is not only false but also spiritually dangerous. Juan nos advierte que no debemos engañarnos a nosotros mismos, —recordándonos que negar nuestro pecado no sólo es falso, sino también espiritualmente peligroso.

But there is hope—when we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. This passage calls us to ongoing repentance and reassures us of the incredible mercy we have in Christ.

Internal Burden and Emotional Distress

Concealed sin brings guilt, and inner turmoil, robbing us of peace and joy.

When sin remains unconfessed, it becomes easier to justify further disobedience, leading to a cycle of spiritual decline.

Confessing our sins to one another and praying for each other is crucial so that we may be healed. Confesar nuestros pecados unos a otros y orar unos por otros es fundamental para que podamos ser sanados.

The word iaome refers to restoring something to a state of health or wholeness,— emphasizing both spiritual and, in some cases, physical restoration. La palabra griega iaomai se refiere a restaurar algo a un estado de salud o integridad, haciendo enfasis en la restauración tanto espiritual como, en algunos casos, física.

II. The Power of Righteous Prayer (James 5:16b) II. El poder de la oración justa (Santiago 5:16b)

if Elders are called to set an example of personal righteousness, James 5:16b makes it clear that the whole church is to pray. Si bien los ancianos están llamados a dar un ejemplo de rectitud personal, Santiago 5:16b deja en claro que toda la iglesia debe orar.

Every believer—righteous by faith—is invited to pray. /Todo creyente, justo por la fe, está invitado a orar.

However, the effectiveness of prayer depends not on the goodness or merit of the one praying, but on the grace and power of God. Sin embargo, la eficacia de la oración no depende de la bondad o el mérito del que ora, sino de la gracia y el poder de Dios.

In the latter part of verse 16, James shifts from praying for healing to the power of effective prayer. He emphasizes that the prayer of a “righteous person” is powerful. While all Christians are righteous before God, the Greek word dikeos can also mean a life of visible, godly obedience.

Do I make excuses for my sin by blaming God or others instead of taking responsibility for my actions? ¿Pongo excusas por mi pecado culpando a Dios u otros en lugar de asumir la responsabilidad por mis acciones?

Do my words reflect Christ’s love, or do I use them to tear others down through anger, gossip, or harsh speech? ¿Reflejan mis palabras el amor de Cristo, o las uso para derribar a otros con ira, chismes o palabras duras?

Am I living in obedience to God’s Word, or do I neglect His commands in favor of worldly desires? ¿Estoy viviendo en obediencia a la Palabra de Dios, o descuido Sus mandamientos por deseos mundanos?

Do I approach life with humility and trust in God’s plan, or do I pridefully boast about the future and rely on my own understanding? ¿Enfrento la vida con humildad y confianza en el plan de Dios, o me jacto del futuro con orgullo y confío en mi propio entendimiento?

To this end, we meet every Lord’s Day to worship God and to commune according to the relational commands in Scripture - the "one anothers."

What do you think will happen if we intentionally live out the mission of our church, leading lives of confession and prayer for one another?

Inner Peace and Freedom Confessing our sins and praying for one another relieves guilt and inner turmoil, restoring peace and joy.

A Softened Heart and Renewed Obedience When we confess our sins and pray for one another, our hearts remain tender to God's leading, making it easier to walk in obedience and spiritual growth.

Protection Against the Enemy By confessing our sins and praying for one another, we bring sin into the light, remove the enemy’s foothold, and stand firm in God’s truth and strength.

1. Elijah Was a Man Like Us (James 5:17a)

"Elijah was a man with a nature like ours..."/“Elías era un hombre con una naturaleza como la nuestra…”

James emphasizes that Elijah was not a supernatural being but a man subject to the same human limitations as all believers. Santiago enfatiza que Elías no era un ser sobrenatural sino un hombre sujeto a las mismas limitaciones humanas que todos los creyentes.

Though he was a prophet, he experienced fear (1 Kings 19:3-4), discouragement, and weakness, yet God still heard and answered his prayers. Aunque era un profeta, experimentó temor (1 Reyes 19:3-4), desánimo y debilidad, pero aun así Dios escuchó y respondió sus oraciones.

This echoes the biblical truth that God does not answer prayers based on human greatness but according to His will and faithfulness

(1 John 5:14 “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.” .

The same God who answered Elijah’s prayers invites all believers to pray with confidence

(Hebrews 4:16 “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

2. The Power of Elijah’s First Prayer (James 5:17b)

"He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months." “Y oró fervientemente para que no lloviera, y no llovió sobre la tierra durante tres años y seis meses.”

Elijah’s prayer was aligned with God’s revealed will. In

Deuteronomy 11:16–17 “Take care lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them; then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you, and he will shut up the heavens, so that there will be no rain, and the land will yield no fruit, and you will perish quickly off the good land that the Lord is giving you.”

La oración de Elías estaba en línea con la voluntad revelada de Dios. En

God warned Israel that if they turned to idolatry, He would shut up the heavens so that no rain would fall. Dios advirtió a Israel que si recurrían a la idolatría, Él cerraría los cielos para que no cayera lluvia.

When King Ahab and Israel worshiped Baal (1 Kings 16:30-33), Elijah, as God’s prophet, prayed according to God's judgment. Cuando el rey Acab e Israel adoraron a Baal (1 Reyes 16:30-33), Elías, como profeta de Dios, oró conforme al juicio de Dios.

God honored Elijah’s prayer, and the land experienced a devastating drought, fulfilling what God had spoken in the Law. This shows that effective prayer is not about manipulating God but praying according to His Word and purposes

3. The Power of Elijah’s Second Prayer (James 5:18)

After Israel had fallen into deep idolatry, Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:20-40). Después de que Israel había caído en una profunda idolatría, Elías confrontó a los profetas de Baal en el Monte Carmelo (1 Reyes 18:20-40).

The rain that followed was a sign of God’s mercy and restoration, showing that when there is repentance, God is faithful to forgive and restore La lluvia que siguió fue una señal de la misericordia y restauración de Dios, mostrando que cuando hay arrepentimiento, Dios es fiel para perdonar y restaurar.

I close with this

Confess Your Sins and Seek Christ’s Forgiveness Don’t carry the burden of sin alone. Bring your failures before Christ in repentance, knowing that He is faithful to forgive. True healing begins when we humble ourselves before Him. Confiesa tus pecados y busca el perdón de Cristo No cargues solo con el peso del pecado. Pray for One Another with Sincerity and Faith God calls us to lift each other up in prayer. Do not hesitate to pray for your brothers and sisters, trusting that God hears and answers according to His perfect will.
