Proverbs 1:2-7 (ESV)
2To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of
insight,
3to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice,
and equity;
4to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to
the youth—
5Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who
understands obtain guidance,
6to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and
their riddles.
7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.
The fear of the LORD is
a learned attitude of intense caution
and respectful humility toward God
(i.e., His nature, words, ways of dealing
with people)
that is foundational to knowing Yahweh
and receiving His wisdom.
Proverbs 15:33 (ESV) The fear of the
LORD is instruction in wisdom, and
humility comes before honor.
Deuteronomy 31:12–13 (ESV) Assemble the
people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner
within your towns, that they may hear and learn
to fear the LORD your God, and be careful to do
13
all the words of this law, and that their children,
who have not known it, may hear and learn
to fear the LORD your God, as long as you live in
the land that you are going over the Jordan to
possess.” see also Psalm 34:11
Deuteronomy 2:25 (ESV) This day I
will begin to put the dread and fear
of you on the peoples who are under
the whole heaven, who shall hear the
report of you and shall tremble and
be in anguish because of you.
Psalm 103:13 (ESV) As a father shows
compassion to His children, so the LORD
shows compassion to those who fear him.
Psalm 103:17 (ESV) But the steadfast love
of the LORD is from everlasting to
everlasting on those who fear Him, and
His righteousness to children’s children,
Psalm 115:11 (ESV) You who fear the LORD,
trust in the Lord! He is their help and their shield.
Psalm 147:11 (ESV) but the LORD
takes pleasure in those who fear
Him, in those who hope in His
steadfast love.
Exodus 20:20 (ESV) Moses said to the
people, “Do not fear, for God has come
to test you, that the fear of Him may be
before you, that you may not sin.”
Deuteronomy 6:24 (ESV) And the LORD
commanded us to do all these statutes,
to fear the LORD our God, for our good
always, that He might preserve us alive,
as we are this day.
Proverbs 9:10 (ESV)
The fear of the LORD
is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One
is insight.
Proverbs 2:5 (ESV) then you will
understand the fear of the LORD and
find the knowledge of God.
Proverbs 1:7 (ESV) The fear of the
LORD is the beginning of
knowledge; fools despise wisdom
and instruction.
Proverbs 1:7 (ESV) The fear of the LORD
is the beginning of knowledge; fools
despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:29–32 (ESV) Because they
hated knowledge and did not choose the
30
fear of the LORD, would have none of my
counsel and despised all my reproof,
31therefore they shall eat the fruit of their
way, and have their fill of their own
32
devices. For the simple are killed by their
turning away, and the complacency of
fools destroys them;
Proverbs 1:7 (ESV) The fear of the LORD
is the beginning of knowledge; fools
despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 5:11–15 (ESV) and at the end of
your life you groan, when your flesh and
12
body are consumed, and you say, “How I
hated discipline, and my heart despised
13
reproof! I did not listen to the voice of my
teachers or incline my ear to my instructors.
14I am at the brink of utter ruin in the
assembled congregation.”
Proverbs 14:9 (ESV) Fools mock at the
guilt offering, but the upright enjoy
acceptance.

own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn
away from evil.

the word brings destruction on himself,
but he who reveres the commandment
will be rewarded.

LORD is hatred of evil. Pride and
arrogance and the way of evil and
perverted speech I hate.

arrogant in heart is an abomination to
the LORD; be assured, he will not go
unpunished.

be well.
Deuteronomy 6:2 (ESV) that you may
fear the LORD your God, you and your

26

heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.
And I will remove the heart of stone from your
27
flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will
put my Spirit within you, and cause you to
walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my
rules.
1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 (ESV) For they
themselves report concerning us the kind of
reception we had among you, and how you
turned to God from idols to serve the living
10
and true God, and to wait for his Son from
heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus
who delivers us from the wrath to come.
