PR O V E R B S PROVERBS W i s d o m W i s d o m f o f o r r a l l a l l Proverbs 1:2-7 (ESV) 2To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, 3to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; 4to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth— 5Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, 6to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles. 7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. The fear of the LORD is a learned attitude of intense caution and respectful humility toward God (i.e., His nature, words, ways of dealing with people) that is foundational to knowing Yahweh and receiving His wisdom. Proverbs 15:33 (ESV) The fear of the LORD is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor. Deuteronomy 31:12–13 (ESV) Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner within your towns, that they may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God, and be careful to do 13 all the words of this law, and that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as you live in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.” see also Psalm 34:11 Deuteronomy 2:25 (ESV) This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you. Psalm 103:13 (ESV) As a father shows compassion to His children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him. Psalm 103:17 (ESV) But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children, Psalm 115:11 (ESV) You who fear the LORD, trust in the Lord! Joshua 24:14 (ESV) “Now therefore fear the LORD and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 1 Samuel 12:14 (ESV) If you will fear the LORD and serve him and obey his voice and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, and if both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the LORD your God, it will be well. Deuteronomy 6:2 (ESV) that you may fear the LORD your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. Psalm 112:1 (ESV) Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commandments! Deuteronomy 6:13 (ESV) It is the LORD your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. Ezekiel 36:25–27 (ESV) I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I 26 will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your 27 flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 (ESV) For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living 10 and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. Proverbs 23:17 (ESV) Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the LORD all the day.
