Begin in Genesis 48
Who were Manasseh and Ephraim?
Both Manasseh and Ephraim were sons born to Joseph while in Egypt.
Both sons born in exile.
Manasseh was the firstborn.
Jacob/ Israel, who is Joseph’s father, is reaching the end of his earthly life and he wants to bless the sons of Joseph.
Joseph brings his sons before Jacob.
Jacob upon seeing his grandsons states:

Genesis 48:5 NIV
“Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine.
Though both Manasseh and Ephraim were born in exile, they are chosen.
These sons will be no different than any of the others as they too will inherit an inheritance.
This speaks to chosen-ness.

1. God declares that we are chosen.
To be in covenant with Him.
Redeemed by Jesus.
Genesis 48:14–22 NIV
But Israel reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head, though he was the younger, and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn. Then he blessed Joseph and said, “May the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day, the Angel who has delivered me from all harm —may he bless these boys. May they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they increase greatly on the earth.” When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim’s head he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. Joseph said to him, “No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.” But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a group of nations.” He blessed them that day and said, “In your name will Israel pronounce this blessing: ‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.’ ” So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh. Then Israel said to Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you and take you back to the land of your fathers. And to you I give one more ridge of land than to your brothers, the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow.”
At the end of this passage, Jacob declares that his decendants will one day flee Egypt to return home.
We know that after the Exodus this prophecy came to pass.
The decendants of Jacob inheriting a portion of the Promised Land.
But during this time of blessing, Jacob blessed Ephraim before Manasseh.
Traditionally, the firstborn would inherit a greater blessing.
But in this case, the second born, Ephraim was blessed first.
Joseph protested, but Jacob refused to change the position of his hands.
Why?
In order to discover why, we need to investigate the names of the brothers.
Start with Manasseh:

This name means to forget.
Manasseh, the firstborn son of Joseph who is in exile.
Joseph who was sold into slavery by his own brothers.
Who endured trial in a forign land calls his firstborn Manasseh: to forget.
One aspect that we can glean from this name is recognized in the trial endured by Joseph.
Joseph was in Egypt.

2. And Egypt did all things possible to cause Joseph to forget.
To assimilate.
To become Egyptian.
To forget his heriatge, where he came from.
To forget the God who delivered him numerous times.
To walk away from the person God called him to be be toward the person the world around him wanted him to be.

3. Egypt sought to cause Joseph to forget.
4. To forget the identity he was given by Almighty God.
To forget and them to become something he was never supposed to be.
Yet, Joseph endured.
Joseph did not forget.
As we looked through the account of Joseph in exile, over and over again, He gave glory to God.
In the midst of trial, Joseph saw his trouble as a means of God’s provision.
During this exile, Joseph longed to be reunited with family.
He longed to be remembered by God.
Joseph rightly chose to look toward God’s provision during trial rather than allowing the trial to overcome him.
In essence, the power of Egypt was not able to cause Joseph to forget.
How did Joseph overcome the power of conformity?
Because he chose to remember God.

5. Joseph chose to remember the authority of God.
6. And in humility he chose to submit to this authority.
He looked to God as the reason for hope.
Application for us:
1 John 2:15–17 NIV
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
Do not love the world.
What world is John talking about?

7. John tells us not to love the things of this fallen world.
Why should we not love the world?

8. If we love the world, we choose not to love God.
9. The things of this world distract us from the love of God.
The lusts of this world can cause us to replace our love for God in exchange for fleeting things.
What does loving the world entice us to do?

10. The fallen world entices us to conform.
To become as it is, passing away.
John says do Not love the world because if you love the world, you will be enticed to forget your love for God.
Like Joseph in exile.
The power, enticements and carnality of Egypt sought to cause Joseph to forget God.
Egypt wanted Jospeh to embrace the priveledge fo his position and engage in the lusts afforded him.
But Joseph refused.
The world we dwell in is no different.
We are in exile.
Seperated from God awaiting to be finally reuinted to our true home.

11. In exile, the world wants us to engage in the lusts of the flesh.
The lusts of the eyes.
and the pride of life.
Brothers and sisters, we unfortunately live in a world that celebrates the lust of the flesh and eyes.
We live in a culture that celebrates pornography.
This is not an innocent exchange between consenting adults.
Pornography perverts the mind.
It has the potential to take control of our thoughts.
It causes us to exchange what is beautiful for the perverse.
It is degrading and vile.
Corrupting the mind.
It has the power to destroy families and relationships.
This is something that we cannot engage in whatsoever.

2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

14. We demolish strongholds in our lives through the authority of God.
Through humility and recongition that we need the power of God in our loves to help us not become like Egypt.
The word demolish is to utterly destroy.
Not remnants left.
This is the attitude we must have when it come not only to pornography but also to other temptations in our lives that have the potential to cause us to forget that we are delivered from it by the power of the Name of Jesus.

1 John 2:16 NASB95
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
Pride of life we do not need God.
We can do it on our own.
Pride of life to reject humility under authority.
Seek the Lord
