In our text today, John gives us an account of the work that takes place in Samaria. We see the Samaritans eager to come and see and hear from Jesus, many believe from the woman's testimony. But upon Jesus staying with them, many more believe because of Jesus words.
39 From that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all the things that I have done.”
40 So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.
They kept on asking is the sense 41 Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe,
We were impressed by what you said. But now, even more so from Jesus own mouth we have heard and believed the good news. Our faith is now fully matured.
“for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the
Savior of the world.”
Jesus is a Savior. He is not a gene or magician here for your entertainment or to bestow temporal benefits. He is not just your friend though he is that. He is not just an example. He is not merely a teacher from God. Not just a prophet. He is a Savior. The Savior we all need, because we are all powerless to save ourselves. What good is a mere example if you’re powerless to follow his example. What good to us as a prophet, if we are powerless to heed his words. He doesn’t make salvation possible
But if he is our Savior. He actually saves.
“World”
This amazing word comes up in John again. We need to consider the genius of John for a moment.
John 1:10 “He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.”
He comes to the world of fallen sinners and they don’t know him because they lie in spiritual darkness
John 1:29 “The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”
The Lamb is the common remedy for the common human malady.
John 3:16 ““For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
God in his Son has come to give eternal life to people out of the Fallen world.
John 4:42 “and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world.””
