Matthew 9:18-26

We sent a quote via church text from another Pastor who said, “Satan knows the power of discouragement. He can't harm the Christian, but if he can discourage them they'll do most of the harm themselves." Like Jairus and the Woman of blood, both are at the end of what the world of men might do for them. There is no one that can help but The One.
Matthew 9:18–26 “ While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.” 19 So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples. 20 And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. 21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” 22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour. 23 When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, 24 He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. 25 But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went out into all that land.”
If you have seen the “Chosen” please disregard it. Any fiction, etc.
Matthew 9:18–19 “ While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.” 19 So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples.” Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:40-56,
Now, many men care more about their businesses, companies, or cars. But there are many who truly love their kids. And nothing hurts worse than seeing your kids suffer or even be taken. Ok, so lets look at Mark & Luke, because we have some details to fill. Of course, this is Jairus as we see in Mark/Luke that seeks Jesus. Matthew doesn't even mention his name.
Here we see him recognize that Jesus is greater by bowing and scraping to him.
He is called in Luke, an archon tes synagoges - ruler of the synagou-ge. Now this doesn't mean was even a rabbi. The ruler was usually influential, well off and often politically connected.
Mark 5:23 …“My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.”” Little daughter is θυγάτριον - thygatrion - Luke says she is 12 years old and whether she is dead yet or not, she is when they get there.
(Luke 8:40-56) “for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she was dying.”
Matthew 9:20–21 “ And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. 21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.””
κράσπεδου n: the border of a garment—‘fringe.’ a tassel.
The tassel was these. they were worn by the Hebrew men to remind them of the big 10. Deuteronomy 22:12 “ “You shall make tassels on the four corners of the clothing with which you cover yourself.” (Numbers 15:37–41)
The hem is a big deal. Some ancient mesopatamian writings tell us that cutting off the hem was to strip one of his personality, authority, etc. in 1 Samuel 24 david cut the hem off Saul's robe.
now, does all this mean this woman is touching the hem because its the law and its Gods word, etc. No, the greek could quite literally just be the hem of his outer robe. Was it the woman's supersticious idea that touching a garment woud heal or or faith that healed her because she sought Jesus out? Look:
Matthew 9:22 “ But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.”
Jesus confirms, He healed her, not his tassles. Though this event became well known among the people. In Mark 6:56 “ Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that they might just touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.” (Matthew 14:36)
Now some will say Jesus himself says it was her faith. But that is not what he says. Where did her faith bring her? Not to find a discarded robe or jacket or hanky, but Jesus. Its not the what, its the who. She has a crazy idea to touch his hem, the same one the Pharisees enlarge to appear holy (Matthew 23:5) but her almost “method” brings her to Jesus, who is the source, thats the all. What Jesus says is a common jewish hyperbole. We need to ask the why. You can have great faith in an apple - but the apple wont save you. Might help with your hunger. But faith placed in one who can respond. Who can forgive sins, heal the sick, and soon, raise the dead.
Some think since she was among the crowd and a jewish woman wouldn't touch a rabbi and make them unclean, nor be in a crowd making them all unclean that she might even be what? Right, a gentile. Or if a Jew, she might be embarrassed to be in the crowd and unclean to reveal herself.
Regardless, Jesus utterly healed her. If she is a Jew, she could go be cleansed and make sacrifices restored to worship. If a gentile, she can return to her life. God is Good!
Can you imagine when Jairus saw this, how encouraged he was? Any delay could kill his daughter and at the same time, give him hope for healing because Jesus can heal. As a matter of fact…
Matthew 9:23–24 “ When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, 24 He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him.”
They’re too late! Lets look again at Mark 5:35–37While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” 36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” 37 And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.”
On the way, the girl is dead. don't bother jesus. no one can raise the dead. ha.
The 3 among the 12. Here, the mount of transfiguration and the garden.
The girl is how old again? How many years was the woman in travail? Suffering for 12 years or a 12 year old suffering. As connected as this could be, it could all mean nothing. i mean he’s only healing, everyone. Everyone that comes to Him in Faith. We’ll discuss more in minute
Matthew 9:25–26 “ But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went out into all that land.”
We see more when we look at Mark and Luke but lets look right now at: Mark 5:40–43 “ And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him (the 3), and entered where the child was lying. 41 Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” (Aramaic spoken in the ancient near east since about 600bc! Its- not arabic) which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement. 43 But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.”
Jesus didn’t raise every dead person or child. Here though he shows His power over death. He would eventually defeat death entirely on the cross and resurrection to those that would believe. And in Revelation we see where Death and Hell are cast into the lake of fire.
In closing, I want to be careful about dismissing the age of each types of suffering. Prophecy is in patterns generally in the bible and the girl (or girls) raised are certainly daughter’s of Zion. First the possible gentile secondly that which might represent Zechariah 2:10 “ “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,” says the Lord.” and Zechariah 9:9 “ “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.” So this, our healer, our savior, our king, is all of it! What He does is the witness of it, who He is, is the source of it all. God Has come to us, living in out midst.
For those who are struggling, I want to be very careful about dismissing anyone or anything here. I want you to touch the hem of his garment because its jesus. Not a hem. I want you to worship at His feet, because its needed, required. Worship is due Him. And we at His feet, can reach up and touch the hem of His garment, asking God to empower us to walk in our gifts, live in our confession and see miracles and healing done!
