David and Bathsheba PT. 2:

Okay so here we are today going through part two of David and Bathsheba
and last week when we started this, we only went through the first 5 verses
Now in those first 5 verses we see the sin that was in Davids life come to a bit of a climax
all the sexual sin that was in His life, finally has come to a braking point here in chapter 11
Last week we talked about the power of the eyes, and how David gave into temptation and fed His flesh for a woman on the roof, Which all started with him looking for too long
It started with a glance, that turned into a gaze, and then that Gaze turned into a form of action, which in Davids case was Him sending messengers and inquiring of Bathsheba , and finally acting out on the lust in his heart
Now David when we looked back had a history of engaging in Sexual sin that had been un checked for a number of years
He didn’t just decide one day to commit adultery, It was years of feeding the desires in his heart
Now here in these next 20 verses that we are going to go through, we are going to see a number of different things that David tries to do to cover up His sin
and its something that i’m sure all of us have done at one point or another, we have all tried to cover up sin in our life thinking that it would just randomly go away on its own ( Share the story of the water balloon launcher and Ryans House )
Hiding sin is never something that we should do simply because Jesus died on the cross and gave us the ability to confess our sin
Its the very opposite of what comes natural to us
confessing our sin is at times a very difficult thing to grasp and a very difficult thing to come to terms with
but confession is very necessary in order for there to be growth in the christian Walk
James 5:16 “16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”
David was tempted, His temptation lead to his desire, which lead to action, the actual act of Sin which leads to His down fall and now
Davids 1st attempt at Covering up His sin
2 Samuel 11:6 “6 Then David sent to Joab, saying, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David.”
2 Samuel 11:7 “7 When Uriah had come to him, David asked how Joab was doing, and how the people were doing, and how the war prospered.”
2 Samuel 11:8 “8 And David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” So Uriah departed from the king’s house, and a gift of food from the king followed him.”
2 Samuel 11:9 “9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house.”
Okay so David thinks here that if he can get uriah to go Home and see His wife after being in battle for some time that maybe, just , maybe they would be intimate which would allow David to say that the baby is Uriahs
a very desperate attempt to cover up his sin
SIN has this ability to cause desperation in us, when it comes to covering up the sin, when we are not willing to confess the sin
people will take covering up sin extremely far and it can become extremely dangerous
I mean check out all the documentaries on Netflix where some dude starts cheating on his wife and he’s got kids and he doesn’t wanna get caught so he kills the whole family thinking it’ll all work out
It never works out, ever
If you sin if you make a big mistake, thats where you experience the grace of God , the death of Jesus on the cross
you can be forgiven and you can make it right, you still have to suffer the consequences but you can be forgiven and you can grow from your mistakes
David could have just taken this one on the chin but instead , in desperation He is trying to do all this crazy stuff
He was losing His mind in the process of covering the sin in His life
I came across these two quotes that Ill read with you guys that I thought were very insightful:
The answer to hidden sin is confession and repentance. To whom should we confess? The answer is in the question, “Whom have we sinned against?” “If you sin secretly, confess secretly, admitting publicly that you need the victory but keeping details to yourself. If you sin openly confess openly to remove stumbling blocks from those whom you have hindered. If you have sinned spiritually (prayerlessness, lovelessness, and unbelief as well as their offspring, criticism, etc.) then confess to the church that you have been a hindrance.” (J. Edwin Orr)
“As soon as ever we are conscious of sin, the right thing is not to begin to reason with the sin, or to wait until we have brought ourselves into a proper state of heart about it, but to go at once and confess the transgression unto the Lord, there and then.” (Spurgeon)
Sin is something that should be dealt with not covered up
it is something that needs to be instantly taken to the throne and prayed about
its really actually sad when we christians think we need to behave before we can run to the Lord , its actually the exact opposite, we need to run to the Lord so we can begin to behave !
(Expound)
2 Samuel 11:10 “10 So when they told David, saying, “Uriah did not go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Did you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?””
2 Samuel 11:11 “11 And Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open fields. Shall I then go to my house to eat and drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.”
Now this to me is very sad because it shows the character of the Man David is going to Kill, Here he is finally at home after being in battle
He’s actually been taken from the campaign and brought back home so that David could try and orchestrate Bathsheba getting pregnant
but it doesn’t work
Uriah is a good man, a man of good character refused to sleep with His wife while his other countrymen were out fighting a battle that he should have been at.
Davids 2nd Attempt at covering Up His sin
2 Samuel 11:12 “12 Then David said to Uriah, “Wait here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next.”
2 Samuel 11:13 “13 Now when David called him, he ate and drank before him; and he made him drunk. And at evening he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house.”
Now this time David tries to get Uriah drunk to go back home and sleep with His wife but again, it fails
Uriah even when he’s had a little too much of grandmas cough medicine still Had the ability to do the right thing
( drinking is no excuse to sin, How many stories do you hear, oh well he cheated but its because he was drunk) ya never a good excuse
He was a man of integrity and a man that embodied what the Apostle Paul wrote in the book of Romans chapter 12
Romans 12:15–16 “15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.”
Uriah was a stand up guy that was not willing to receive any special treatment while His brothers were out fighting battles
Now David on the other hand has continued to allow the sin in His life to compound
When we give into sin, that sin doesn’t stay small, It actually compounds and grows and grows and grows until it gets to a point of not growing anymore. Especially when you don’t confess it
John 8:34 “34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.”
David had become desperate to cover up His sin and is slowly realizing that its going to be more difficult than he expected to cover it up
So he has become a slave to the sin that is in his life
and thats what Happens to us , when we don’t deal with the sin in our life the proper way, when we don’t take it to the cross and eliminate it from our life, we become a slave to it and the sin becomes our master
what ever it is that our flesh wants , that very thing, it has the ability to dictate how we live life, how we treat people , how we act around other people, how we love on people, how we treat our families, and I could go on.
1 John 3:4 “4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.”
Sin and lawlessness go hand in hand, if you are willing to sin against the Lord who is the ultimate authority , than you are willing to brake the law
David did both, HE broke the Law and he sinned against the Lord, He had become a slave to sin and he had become lawless !
Its really simple when we think about it, we have 2 choices in life, we either chose to live for the Lord or we chose to live for sin and the world, you cant do both
1 John 2:15 “15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
Romans 12:2 “2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
David in this weak moment of His life became a slave to the sin that was in His life, lets continue through the rest of the verses to see just How far he was willing to take this
Davids Desperation Leads to Uriahs Death 3rd and Final attempt
2 Samuel 11:14 “14 In the morning it happened that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.”
so the very letter that David wrote, with the message to kill uriah , was hand delivered by Uriah
2 Samuel 11:15 “15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck down and die.”
David commits murder
so this verse right here shows us how good and trust worthy Uriah was, he was trust worthy enough to hand deliver the message regarding his own death for David , David knew that he wouldn’t open the letter
Uriah was a valiant man of good character,
its very sad the affect sin in one mans life has on another
that is something that when you are involved in sin so great like David was , you don’t have the ability to see who it is affecting
it is absolutely affecting those around you and sometimes you just don’t know it !
Now David is guilty of Adultery and Now Murder
so when it comes to adultery , it is actually punishable by death
Leviticus 20:10 “10 ‘The man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress, shall surely be put to death.”
And so is committing murder
Genesis 9:6 “6 “Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man.”
Exodus 21:12 “12 “He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death.”
committing murder is the result of covering the sin that was on the surface now of Davids life
Exodus 23:7 “7 Keep yourself far from a false matter; do not kill the innocent and righteous. For I will not justify the wicked.”
So murder was equal to adultery and now David has committed both
2 Samuel 11:16 “16 So it was, while Joab besieged the city, that he assigned Uriah to a place where he knew there were valiant men.”
2 Samuel 11:17 “17 Then the men of the city came out and fought with Joab. And some of the people of the servants of David fell; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
Joab knew what he was doing was wrong, he most definitely had questions going about in his head that should have caused him to do the right thing
but if we remember from last week Joab was a murderer also, when he killed Abner and got away with it
Its almost as if he is okay doing this deed for David since David spared his life
now this is why its important to surround yourself with men and women that will keep you Honest
good friends aren’t always the friends that are willing to do everything with you
good friends are willing to be open and honest with you and are willing to call you out when you are wrong
if Joab maybe would have checked David then David would have had to deal with this a different way
my encouragement to you is to surround yourself with friends that Love you so much they will be Honest with you
truth told in love is the ultimate form of love toward anybody
Proverbs 12:26 “26 The righteous should choose his friends carefully, For the way of the wicked leads them astray.”
John 15:13 “13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”
you want friends that are going to be solid, that have a relationship with the lord and that are trustworthy
(Expound) ( share a story of being honest with friends )
2 Samuel 11:18 “18 Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war,”
2 Samuel 11:19 “19 and charged the messenger, saying, “When you have finished telling the matters of the war to the king,”
2 Samuel 11:20 “20 if it happens that the king’s wrath rises, and he says to you: ‘Why did you approach so near to the city when you fought? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall?”
2 Samuel 11:21 “21 Who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Was it not a woman who cast a piece of a millstone on him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you go near the wall?’—then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.’ ””
2 Samuel 11:22 “22 So the messenger went, and came and told David all that Joab had sent by him.”
2 Samuel 11:23 “23 And the messenger said to David, “Surely the men prevailed against us and came out to us in the field; then we drove them back as far as the entrance of the gate.”
2 Samuel 11:24 “24 The archers shot from the wall at your servants; and some of the king’s servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.””
2 Samuel 11:25 “25 Then David said to the messenger, “Thus you shall say to Joab: ‘Do not let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Strengthen your attack against the city, and overthrow it.’ So encourage him.””
2 Samuel 11:26 “26 When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.”
2 Samuel 11:27 “27 And when her mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.”
Now David officially Has 8 wives
Now there are a ton of Little details that we can pick out of this text but Id rather focus on 2 things that we are going to talk about to finish off this chapter, that we see play out in Davids life during this time.
and those two things being Deception , and displeasure
1) Deception
Now David was in the position that he was in because he was being disobedient to what God actually had for him
in the beginning of the chapter we read that David should have been out in the field fighting with the men and His army , but instead for what ever reason he was at home chilling
He was in the wrong place at the wrong time
now this leads to the death of a friend and what seems to be no way out for David. So he decides to try and be deceptive about what is going on
He tries to cover up the sin that He committed
and thats something Id like to talk about , deception
you see when we commit sin , the worst thing we can do is try and cover it up and throw dirt on it and act like it never happened
we end up deceiving those around us but also ourselves when we are real and honest with what is going on
we can try and be deceptive but God sees the deepest darkest most hidden places in our Hearts
we cant deceive God and truthfully when we deceive people it only lasts for so long ! Eventually people find out
(Expound)
Numbers 32:23 “23 But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the Lord; and be sure your sin will find you out.”
Proverbs 28:13 “13 He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.”
Luke 12:2 “2 For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.”
Ecclesiastes 12:14 “14 For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.”
Luke 8:17 “17 For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light.”
1 John 1:5–8 “5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”
Mark 7:21–22 “21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.”
deception comes from the flesh and is used by the enemy to carry out His agenda Like we see here with David
Now David was a man that had become Lost for some time and His sin snowballed out of control because instead of trying to find victory in it and deal with it the right way, he tried to cover it up
Openness/ Honesty
Sin has a sneaky way of compounding itself and before you realize it you’ve become more involved and more trapped by it.
so the opposite of being deceptive is to be Honest and open about what it is that is going on in your life
if David would have just been open and honest about His struggles with the Lord and the men around Him it would have given Him the strength needed to get through those Hard times
Proverbs 12:22 “22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, But those who deal truthfully are His delight.”
Proverbs 11:3 “3 The integrity of the upright will guide them, But the perversity of the unfaithful will destroy them.”
1 John 1:7 “7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
John 8:32 “32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.””
so the things that keep us back from being open and honest like pride, shame and guilt are all things that we need to understand should not hold us back when being open and honest
being open and honest are very intimidating especially when we feel like we are exposing something dark that is in our heart
but the people who are brothers and sisters in christ are there to help with what ever it is that you need
Galatians 6:1–2 “1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
we christians should be ready to receive someone who is willing to be open and honest
and we are to do it with a spirit of gentleness , and with Love
(Expound) talk about not caring about peoples business but only for loving them and helping them
2)Now the last thing I want to talk about is Displeasure:
the very last verse and the very last sentence of chapter 11 it says “The thing David had done displeased the lord”
Davids scheme that he orchestrated may have worked from a human perspective but it displeased God
In Psalm chapter 5 David writes
Psalm 5:4 “4 For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, Nor shall evil dwell with You.”
And Again in Psalm chapter 11
Psalm 11:5 “5 The Lord tests the righteous, But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.”
Proverbs 6:16–19 “16 These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.”
1 Thessalonians 4:1–8 “1 Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God; 2 for you know what commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified. 7 For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. 8 Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit.”
So David rejected the Lord with His disobedience and His in ability to withstand the temptation that was before Him
and the things that He did affected everyone around him, Himself , and generations after Him
If only David would have reflected on the things that God had already done in His life and looked ahead at the possible outcomes, He probably wouldn’t have done what He did
you see it goes back to what we talked about last weekend , what is louder in your life ? the Spirit or your flesh
when the flesh is so loud you can’t even reflect or look ahead thats a dangerous place
David was in a very dangerous place to just completely disregard everything to fulfill His desire
When you guys are tempted its always important to reflect in your mind on the things that God has done in your life and the outcome of giving in to the temptation in-front of you
I mean just imagine if David only Knew what was to come from this sin that was hidden in his heart
So ill leave you with this, when it comes to sin, ask yourself . Is it worth it ? is it truly going to satisfy me? Who is it going to hurt ? What are the consequences going to be ? and Will it displease the Lord ?
Lets pray
