Who, What, When, How, Where

Who - God in his sovereign will

What - Created, endowed man with an eternal spirit, knew the need for salvation, had the plan for salvation, and chose those for salvation

When - Before creation and before time and the foundations of the world

How - Through the substitutional sacrificial atonement of God the Son, Jesus Christ, for those whom He has elected

Where - Through the revealed living word of God in scriptures

Why - Soli Deo Gloria

Romans 9:19–24 “You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory— even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles?”

Why has God done all that he has?

Not because:

He was not lacking anything

Father, Son, and Spirit complete in perfection

John 14:10 “Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.”

All co-equal, Holy, with perfect love

Man needs God but God does not need man - Man is not the central figure

Acts 17:24–25 “The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.”

God provides all that we need

Genesis 1:26–27 “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

God created man in God’s image, “Our” image pointing to the Trinity.

God created man to have an eternal soul

God made man, Adam and Eve, with out sin and there was no death

God was not surprised at the fall of man

The need for the substitutionary sacrificial atonement was not plan B, it was not a reaction

Sinful man wants to create a god in man’s image

God is sovereign

He is the owner and ruler of his creation

For the glory of his name

To show his wrath at sin, his justice

Romans 12:19 “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.””

To make known his power

To show his patience

1 Peter 3:20 “because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.”

Psalm 86:15 “But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.”

In order to make known the the riches of his glory

Even the punishment to God’s chosen people is for God’s glory

Isaiah 48 begins with the prophet telling of the refining of Israel for the glory of God

1-8 speaks of Israel not listening and rebelling

Isaiah 48:8 “You have never heard, you have never known, from of old your ear has not been opened. For I knew that you would surely deal treacherously, and that from before birth you were called a rebel.”

Isaiah 48:9–11 ““For my name’s sake I defer my anger; for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you, that I may not cut you off. Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried you in the furnace of affliction. For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another.”

Psalm 29:1–2 “Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.”

David says Ascribe, or give with urgency praise and glory to God

Again in Psalm 96 we read a very similar passage

Psalm 96:7–9 “Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength! Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts! Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth!”

1 Peter 4:11 “whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

From verses 1-6 Peter tell us to no longer live according to the world, as the unsaved Gentiles want to do

Verses 7-10 he tells us how we, now that we are a new creature, should live and act toward one another: 1 Peter 4:10 “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:”

Whoever speaks, whoever serves, do so that in everything God may be glorified

1 Corinthians 10:31 “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

John 12:28 “Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.””

Matthew 5:13–16 ““You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Colossians 3:17 “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
