Romans 8:1–8 NIV
1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.
When reading any text, but especially the Bible, there are a few context questions one must ask about the text.
The who, what, when, where, and how’s of the text.
verses one answers one of those questions and that is the who.
Romans 8:1 NIV
1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,
This is addressed to those who already follow Jesus, those who already belong to him.
In prior chapters of Romans Paul expresses to the church of Rome the life outside of grace, the life not filled with the Holy Spirit only leads to death, slavery to sin, and eternal separation from Jesus.
Here Paul is starting out with the good news for those who belong to Him. That there is (Now) (No Condemnation) (For those who are in Jesus).
Romans 8:2 NIV
2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
Fire Bible Chapter 8

This “law of the Spirit of life” is the life-regulating and life-motivating power of the Holy Spirit at work within the lives of Christians.

It was through the perfect life of Jesus, His death in our place, and his resurrection that we have a hope-
and it is the power of the Holy Spirit that sets us free from the slavery of sin.
Before we become saved we are bound to this Law of Sin and set to be justifiably sentenced to an eternal life of death.
To get a better idea of the inner warring man fasces from this Law of Sin we can look back just a few verses back to 7:22-25.

22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inner man, 23 *but I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

24 *O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from the body of this death?

25 *I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

So then, with my mind, I serve the law of God, but with my flesh, the law of sin.

Fire Bible Chapter 8

“The law of sin and death” is the life-controlling and spiritually condemning power of sin, which enslaves people and reduces them to a condition of spiritual misery and shame.

The Law of the Spirit comes into operation as the Christian commits more and more of themselves to the authority and power of the Lord.
The more we give up control to Jesus the more we start to see the Power of the Holy Spirit manifest in our lives and the lives of the ones around us.
The more we surrender to Him the more strength we find to overcome sin and temptation.
The more we surrender the more peace we have and the more of a sound mind we obtain.
Romans 8:3 NIV
3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh,
This is the HOW.
God the Father placed the conviction and punishment of sin on the only man to have lived a perfect life here on earth. He placed it on His one and only son Jesus.
Romans: A New Covenant Commentary Living by the Spirit (8:1–17)

The heart of the problem with the law, was what it was not designed to do: it righteously teaches right from wrong, but it does not transform a person to be righteous, to undo the power of sin Adam introduced into humanity. It was “weak” because it depended on “flesh” to fulfill it—and flesh could never fulfill God’s righteousness

This the next verses is the WHY
Romans 8:4 NIV
4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
As I said a moment ago, Jesus took on the price of our sin. All of humanities past, present, and future sin was nailed into the body of Jesus.
Jesus died so that we can live.
Not just live, But To THRIVE
So how do we Thrive and what makes us Thrive?
Romans 8:5 NIV
5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
It goes back to the mind
Who or what has control of your mind?
Are you like a puppet with strings, only able to do what you master tells you to do, or are you a free man whom the Lord.
It’s kinda like the old Capital One commercials, instead of whats in your wallet it, it is what is in your mind.
Is it the explicit things of this world?
The desperation of losing one’s mind while they lose themselves into varius aspects.
Romans 8:6 NIV
6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.
We must ask ourselves who governs our brains.
The biggest problem in the churches now a days is the people are always looking for a feeling, a lot of “How does this make me feel”
God gave us feelings for a reason and within the correct context, they can be good for us.
But if all we do is search for the next High, that next good feeling, we are on the road
Romans 8:7 NIV
7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.
This is the harsh truth,
if we do not surrender to the Lord, if we do not submit all things to him we cannot please Him and I would go even further….
We cannot find peace of mind.
If You don’t know Jesus let today be that day…
Surrender all to Him and He will give you peace, over come sin and past screw ups, and set your feet on the right path the with strength to walk it with Him by your side and His Holy Spirit indwelling in us.
Another way to renew our minds is to renew our focus back to Jesus and the work that He did on our behalf.
We do it by remembering him through His Holy Communion.
