A Good Person
A Good Person
to a Jew at that time there was only one who is good, and that is God.
we have a different meaning of a good person
someone who does more good things than bad
a person who is nice to their neighbor
a person that volunteers at the animal shelter
a person who gives to help people
a person who obeys the law, for the most part
we are going to look at a man this morning who would classify himself as good
lets look at how Mark describes this man
And as He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and began asking Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
we as christians would welcome him into our church as a christian after we got him to say the prayer.
after all this man is ready
he is some kind of ruler
he’s rich
he is begging to enter the kingdom
he fell on his knees in front of Jesus
wow what a great prospect to be a christian!
What does Jesus do?
He asks
Why Do You Call Me Good?
Why Do You Call Me Good?
V 18
Good teacher
remember the only good one is God
why is this man calling Jesus Good?
is it because he recognizes Jesus as God?
or is he trying to flatter Him
or is he trying to convey goodness on to people who are better than average
V 19
This man call Jesus Good
considers himself Good
So Jesus is correcting him on the definition of good is
good is Godly
good is to have the righteousness of God
Jesus is not saying that He was sinful and thus not Good
but opening the eyes of this man to his sinfulness
this man has a question V 18
what must I do?
the same question that the Philippian jailer asked
But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
And suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the jailhouse were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened.
And when the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.
But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here!”
And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas,
and after he brought them out, he said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your house.”
why didn’t Jesus say the same thing?
the Philippian jailer was ignorant of anything spiritual
the ruler asking Jesus on the other hand had a works orientated religion
and obeying the law was the works that made him good or bad
so Jesus asks do you keep the law?
V 20
the second half dealing with others
these commandments are summed up in the saying
love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind
" and "love your neighbor as yourself,
Therefore the Law has become our tutor unto Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.
the law teaches us of our sin and our need of a Savior
are you doing these things?
V 21
without going into the first half of the commandments Jesus tells him what he must do
V 22
sell all and give to your neighbor. who you say you love as much as yourself
V 23
this young prospect did not want to be saved as much as he thought
he realized that he was not as good as he thought
and his sinful life was more important than eternity
Jesus said to him
V 24-25
rich man like a camel going through the eye of a needle
Impossible!
this man in his own power cannot -will not
this young prospect would have said the prayer to be saved
would have asked Jesus into his heart
come to church for a little while
he would have been like the seed sown on the rocky soil
“And the one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy;
yet he has no root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away.
a good person is someone who thinks there is just one more thing I need to do
not realizing how sinful they are
one sin a day
1 yr 365
65 yr 23,725
this is a good person
each and every sin is death
each and every sin deserves hell
this man instead of realizing his sin and asking for mercy he went away sad
V 26
How can a person possibly be saved?
V 27
God is the only one who can save
even good people are not good enough
V 28
Peter still does not get it
we have done what you said to the rich man
what do we get?
Jesus is going to be gracious to Peter with His answer
V 29-30
so how do we evangelize good people
we have to take the law and educate them on what sin is
and make them realize that they are a sinner
and the holiness of God
