Introduction
The First Command in 1 Peter: Hope fully in God’s grace!
Question: How important is a sober mind in our Christian life?
Answer: Peter teaches that the mind plays a vital role in three ways:
A sober mind enables hope.
A sober mind allows for sincere prayer.
A sober mind resists Satan.
What is the mind?
What is the mind?
Cultural Confusion: Society often conflates the two, leading to a misunderstanding of human nature and mental health.
Many today don't realize they are operating under a materialistic worldview that excludes the biblical concept of the soul.
Illustration: "An older fish swims by two younger fish and says, ‘Morning boys, how’s the water?’ They look at each other and say, ‘What’s water?’"
The mind, according to Scripture, is more than just your thoughts.
It is a “way of thinking, mind, attitude, as the sum total of the whole mental and moral state of being.
The mind is spiritual, not just physical.
We can have cancer of the brain but not of the mind but our mind can be affected by much in this world.
Bible teaches a distinction in the two.
One is outward and the inner man. 2 Corinthians 4:16 “16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.”
16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
The brain and the mind are distinct yet interconnected
The brain provides the physical platform for thought, while the mind engages in spiritual and moral reasoning.
The mind can influence the brain—for example, prayer, meditation, and gratitude have been shown to affect brain function positively.
To keep our brains at peak performance, our bodies need to work hard.
Our physical body is an extraordinary gift to be treasured. Every cell, every heartbeat, every breath is a testament to the Creator’s incredible craftsmanship. It is the temple of the Holy Spirit, created with divine precision to bring honor and glory to God.” - Maria Morgan
Ephesians 4:23 “23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;”
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
What Does It Mean to Be Sober-Minded?
What Does It Mean to Be Sober-Minded?
It does not mean being joyless, humorless, or legalistic.
It is not about taking yourself too seriously or being judgmental.
Sober-mindedness means living with eternity in view.
It means having a single-minded focus on the grace that will be revealed at the return of Christ.
The Struggle We Face:
The Struggle We Face:
We get distracted by temporary things—jobs, possessions, power, appearance.
But eternity clarifies our values and reminds us what truly matters.
Future grace is both a promise and a present power—if God has secured our future, He will also give us every grace needed to get there.

A. The First Command: Hope Fully in God's Grace
"Hope to the end" = Fix your hope completely.
Hope is not a bodily action but an experience of the soul.
Peter’s first command is not "Obey!" but "Hope!"
B. How to Stir Up Hope
B. How to Stir Up Hope
Peter gives two means to cultivate full hope:
Gird up the loins of your mind
Image: A man tucking in his robe to run freely without stumbling.
Meaning: Remove distractions and engage your mind in truth."Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth" (Ephesians 6:14, KJV).
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
Hope grows when the mind is anchored in the truth of Scripture (Romans 15:4).
4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Be sober
Image: A person not drunk, thinking clearly and wisely.
Meaning: Avoid spiritual numbness and worldly distractions.
Stay alert to what dulls your passion for God.
Examples of intoxicating influences: Lust, money, career, entertainment, power, hobbies, social media.
C. The Order of Christianity: Grace First, Hope Second
C. The Order of Christianity: Grace First, Hope Second
The command to hope is built on twelve verses of grace (1 Peter 1:1–12).
1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:
7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
Grace is multiplied to believers (1:2).
Grace was prophesied by the prophets (1:10).
Grace will be fully revealed at the return of Christ (1:13).
Christianity is not first an ethic but first a response to God’s love to us all.

Conclusion: The Disney World Analogy
Conclusion: The Disney World Analogy
"A father comes to his children, and he says, ‘We’re going to Disney World.’ He takes them to the computer; he shows them all those entertainment glories of Disney World. And the kids live that year, they keep asking, ‘How many days till we go to Disney World, is it almost ready?’"
"But there’s something else that happens. They come to him, and they say, ‘Dad, can we buy this, can we go out to eat, can I get a new skateboard?’ What does Dad say? ‘No, no, we can’t do that because we’re saving money because we are going to Disney World!’ And they say, ‘Oh yeah, that’s right!’ And they are able to deal with those hardships, and they are able to be motivated to keep going because they are focusing on the glory that is to come. That’s what sober-minded is."
"Sober-minded means you are focusing on the grace that will be revealed in Jesus Christ; you’re living with eternity in view. And because of that, your values are clarified, and you live with motivation and hope."
