Introduction

Good morning please open in your Bibles to Hebrews 4:14-16 that is Hebrews 4:14-16. In the reality TV show undercover boss, influential and powerful CEOs will go undercover and pose as new employees at their large companies. They undergo hair and make up so no one will recognize them and they spend the show learning the ins and outs of their own company. They spend time with the employees and ask them about how they feel about the company. They are typically mistreated in dramatic fashion by the immediate supervisor, they hear how horrible the work conditions are from employees, and are made to suffer they indignity of being an entry level employee. Then comes the big reveal and everyone has a moment of fear because they know they would have never said what they said if they knew the true identity of the new guy. But the CEO is always “changed” and more appreciative of his workers and promises to fix the problems. He is able to sympathize with their situation and therefore vows to make it better.
There are some similarities with the undercover boss and what our Lord did for us. He like the bosses came down to our level, experienced the harsh reality of this world, and Jesus really can sympathize with our weaknesses. He vows to make things better. However, there is a big difference. The problems with the “company” (our world) are not top down, but rather our problems are the result of our sin and rebellion. This messy world is a mess because of us. But that’s also what makes the reality of the Gospel better than the show. The High Priest, the “CEO” aka God of the world, comes down to our level because he loves us. It’s all our fault, but he becomes like us, sympathizes with our weaknesses and in his life and death fulfills the promises to make this world better.
That is the true story of the Gospel. Yet, do we live like this true. Do you and I live believing that Jesus can sympathize with our weaknesses? Or does the way we live life make it seem like Jesus is uncover. His true identity hidden, and we go about our day as if the CEO isn’t right beside us. This is my goal today: To remind us of the identity of our High Priest. My goal is to use this passage to remind us of who Jesus is as The Son of God, a sinless man, and a gracious King. By “revealing” his true identity my hope is that we live like he is near to us. Read Hebrews 4:14-16
