Welcome
Good to be back
Hope all having a good day
We’ve been working through romans
Overview of the Gospel as it pertains to us
Different aspects of how to live in Good standing with God
Biggest thing is to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior
Know this is how from all the way back to Abraham
Considered righteous because of his faith not what he did
We also get this good standing by believing that Christ died for us
Today we get the greatest news of all
Romans 6 is a powerful chapter
Paul tells us that we are now dead to sin and alive in Christ
How phenomenal is that?
We are no longer slaves to sin
we are now a new type of slave
a truly free slave
our new master is righteousness
Before i move on i am going to make a comment on an ugly word that i will keep saying over and over
That word is slave
I mean slave in the aspect of what rules over our lives
not that we are owned by someone
When we are free to make decisions we are still under the control of something
and that is what i mean by slave
that we are controlled by something
With this new master of righteousness
we are now in alliance with God
we can fully submit ourselves to his Power and his will
What does this all mean?
how are we dead to sin but yet still alive?
Can we just sin and sin and not worry about anything?
NO, not at all.
Paul states
RED
Romans 6:1–2 NIV
What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
We are dead in sin in the effect that it has no power in our lives anymore
we are NOT sinless
that is near impossible
We still sin
but how we respond to that sin is how we are dead to it
Before Christ died and was resurrected
Before you accepted Christ into your life as Lord and savior
Sin is what controlled your life and actions
The guilt of sin was not as profound or even non-existent
I experienced this non-existent feeling of guilt when I was far from God. I would lie and lie to make myself seem cooler than I was. Even the small things. I would try to one up whoever I was talking to. I would take things that were not mine and blame it on other people. I would cheat in school on a test. I would be extremely disrespectful to my parents. I was mean to my friends for no reason. I harbored hate in my heart or people I did not like. After doing all those things I would not feel any guilt. I would chalk it up to “eh, it’s a part of my life and how I operate, people will forgive me.” I lost a lot of good friends that way. I tarnished my relationship with my parents for a long time that way. I knew it was not right, but yet I did it anyway.
Temptation is what we obeyed when slaves were our masters
The more we sinned
the more power sin had over our lives
the more numb we became to it’s effect on our lives
because of this power
the bonds of this slavery grew tighter and tighter
How were we slaves to sin?
United with Adam through birth
Automatically bound to sin in this
Because of this we are dead in this sin
We know this because of Genesis
GREEN
Genesis 3:22 NIV
And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”
Adam and eve sinned and were tied to that sin forever
They would face death because of this sin
They in turn bound all of humanity to sin and the shackles of sin were placed on their wrists
death was the only escape from sin
Sin has the controlling power of our lives in many ways
we believe the lies that sin tells us
we will be more liked than before
we will get away with it
we will be more successful and respected
we will make more money
we will win by doing whatever it takes
there are no consequences
Sin compounds on itself to cause more sin
one lie leads to another
you start to believe your own lies
small things lead to bigger things
disrespect of friends and teachers leads to disrespect of family
vice versa
then leads to disrespect of boss and then spouse
Sin feel s good in the moment
your lies make you popular
you get some fame from stealing
you get laughs from classmates for disrespect
your siblings look up to you and try to emulate you
you climb the ladder at work
you make lots of money in unethical ways
How are we freed from the slavery of sin and break the cycle?
its simple
Belief in Christ
Paul goes on
RED
Romans 6:3–5 NIV
Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.
Paul is saying
Through our baptism
Not the baptism that we see at Worship services
that is water baptsim
there is another baptism that happens when we accept Christ into our lives
This baptism is of the Holy Spirit coming down on us and living inside of us
Jesus tells us of this after his resurrection in Acts
Acts 1:5 states
Acts 1:5 NIV
For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
The baptism Paul is talking about is of the Spirit through belief in Christ
that we are now united to Christ in his death and resurrection
Just as we were once united with Adam at birth
but now that tie is broken and a new tie is formed
Through his death Christ broke the shackles of sin
Even though he never sinned he took the bullet of us and experienced the true death one last time for all humanity
past, present, and future
This true death is the death that comes from the rule of sin
Paul tells us in
RED
Romans 6:6–8 NIV
For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
We experienced this death with him and in his resurrection we experience the new life with him
in order for the shackles to be permanently severed
Christ had to defeat death
His resurrection shatters the shackles so they could never be reapplied
in turn that shatters the power sin has over our lives
Christ died one time and never will have to again
Christ rose once for our salvation and to free us from the shackles of sin
Christ now lives forever to glorify God and through God’s power
Paul tells us this in
RED
Romans 6:9–10 NIV
For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
We are called to do this as well
to live our lives to glorify and honor God
it is enough for us to believe in Christ, proclaim it with our hearts and break free from the shackles of sin
Once we break free from these shackles we know the guilt of sin
we know sin doesn’t just hurt others
it hurts ourselves
and most importantly it hurts God
Remember the story i told about myself and sin when i was far from God and that i felt no guilt for my sins?
That all changed eventually. It wasn’t until I fully accepted Christ into my heart and put my faith in him that I would feel guilt for sinning. And weirdly enough I felt guilt for all those things I did in the past. I tried my hardest to reconcile with those I wronged. Some forgave me, some spat in my face. But the reconciliation I did with God and confession I did relieved me of that guilt. And when I sin now I feel guilt instantly.
I am not perfect
You are not perfect
how you react to your sin will be what defines you
How do we stay free from sin’s reign and ensure the shackles stay completely severed?
It is a simple, but yet difficult answer
Paul tells us how in
RED
Romans 6:11–14 NIV
In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
Pretty simple right?
believe in Christ and don’t let sin reign over your life
Belief in Christ is the easy part
you have to believe it in your heart
don’t just believe it with your mouth
Don’t say you’re a Christian, believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, and keep on sinning without guilt
Those shackles will be tight around your wrist if you are like this
Believe it in your heart and show it through your actions to keep those shackles broken free
Now comes the hard part
offer yourself as an instrument of righteousness
we don’t like to admit
we messed up or are wrong
reason for someone else’s pain
we are disliked by people
In order to offer yourself as a righteousness instrument
confess sins to others
repent our sins
Make an effort to not repeat these sins
actively pray
don’t just pray in the closet
pray in the open
help others without a need of anything in return
worship God in everything you do
not just on Sundays
give all the Glory to God
I told you this was great news
No longer fear death
no longer let sin be the driving force of our lives
Christ died and rose for us to be given new bodies in heaven and on the new earth
we no longer have to let sin weigh heavy on our hearts
We can stand tall and shout with our hearts that Jesus died for my sins and i am going to do everything i can to not sin!
and when we do sin we will make an effort to not repeat that sin and right the wrong of this sin
Be an advocate for change in this world
the change is simple
belief in Christ as your lord and savior
BLUE
John 3:16 NIV
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
God loves us so much that he sent a part of us to die and be resurrected so the shackles of sin can be broken and never return to our wrists
Do not just be a student of the Word
live the Word and spread the Word
Will you pray with me?
Father God, thank you for this day and for your grace. Thank you for the sacrifice you made for us. Thank you for coming and defeating death and sin. I pray that these students will hear this message and proclaim their faith in you with their hearts. I pray that any heart here that is hurting or broken or questioning has the strength to speak to their leader about it. I pray that the shackles of sin stay broken from the wrists of these students and leaders. I thank you for loving us more than we could ever understand. We pray this all in the powerful name of you son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
