What is the Trinity

things that confuse us/mystery; trinity is somewhat of a mystery; the word trinity is not found in scripture. it was apply to the teachings of scripture to describe God; the teaching of the trinity is in scripture

trinity = tri + unity = 3 in 1; in history, people thought Christians were crazy because they couldn’t decide if they had 3 Gods or 1 God

We do not worship 3, but only 1

Deuteronomy 6:4 “4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”

There is one God; always has been and always will be

God has 3 distinct persons; the father, the son, and the Holy spirit; each one is God

But the father is not the son, the son is not the holy spirit, and the holy spirit is not the father

There are scriptures where we see the 3 of them cohesively working together

Matthew 3:16–17 “16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.””

Even in the statement that Jesus gives his disciples to go and make disciples, he tells them that he is a coequal of 3. Matthew 28:19–20 “19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.””

If we were to try to separate them into 3 different gods, this would be called polytheistic

some try to explain it as God shows up at different times in different forms; like water; solid, liquid, and gas; this is called modalism

neither one of these are compatible with what the bible teaches though.

there is mystery that is involved in understanding this; what we need to believe is what the bible says; our human minds try to rationalize things but the deepness of this is beyond what our human minds can understand

the bible tells us that there are secret things that only God knows; we can put this in that category

Deuteronomy 29:29 “29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”
