What is Hebrews?
A Letter? A Sermon? Both? - Letter bits, rehetorical bits.
No author named - Paul? Apollos?
When written? Probably before 70 AD (What critical things happened in 70 ad?) It was probably written before, because it focuses on the way the sacrificial system and the temptation to go back to it for Christians.
Theme: the Supremacy of Jesus! He is the greatest and best and only option for faith, and Christians must endure in following him.
This is something we need to hear.
It was written to the early church, but via them to all Christians down through the ages.
In our day, as in every age, there are contenders for the crown. People or things that we are tempted to trust in, or believe in that compete with Jesus for top spot.
Even now there are still people who are tempted to go back to Judaism, with is a truncated religion. It’s like living in a half constructed house, with some tarps rigged up to cover the gaps. It is incomplete. You have before you the glorious house of faith, but sometimes you cannot see it clearly. Hebrews reminds us of the manifold ways that Jesus is the best.

The Son is the Word of God

The Bible is a collection of writings, like a pile of scrolls.
Sometimes we think of it very neat and tidy in a book.
It was put together over many years by many authors, but one God speaking:
Hebrews 1:1 ESV
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,
Many Times & ways?
The Fathers
Many authors/prophets - Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Anonymous
Many ways - out of burning bush, various glories, voice from heaven, angels, visions, urim/thumin
God has been speaking to his people down through the ages.
But there has been a change in the way he speaks. He no longer speaks to us from urim/thumin and in many and various ways:
Hebrews 1:2 ESV
but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son...
The Son of God is the ultimate revelation of the Word of God
God has spoken through Jesus - he saved the best for last!
Jesus came into the world bringing the message of God.
John 12:49–50 ESV
For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”
Note also it is the “last days” - the last days is a time period from the Asscension of Jesus till now. It’s
