Let’s get Building

Luke 6:46–49 NASB 95
“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”
Keep in mind the context
Jesus had made clear He was doing a new thing. (DC Talk)
At the end of Chapter 5 Jesus used an illustration to explain what God was doing. Luke, led by Holy Spirit thought this was important enough to make sure Theopolis and all that would read this Gospel, would understand that Jesus and His teachings are the foundations of a Brand New thing for humanity.
His new covenant would not only bring forgiveness of sin for the repentant but His resurrection would make confirm His Lordship over death and ability to provide a life that is abundant and free from bondage to sin.
So, in chapter six, Jesus states clearly His Lordship over the Law and the old covenant, He selects apostles to be used to build His Church, He calls whosoever will to come on level ground, and calls His followers to live for eternity, love our enemies and show mercy to those not worthy of it.

1. What you do with the Words of Jesus reveals what you really believe about Him.

Luke 6:46 NASB 95
“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
Often times the highly needed focus on the love and mercy of Jesus overshadows the seriousness of Jesus concerning the need to obey His Word.
John 17:17 NASB 95
Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
John 14:25–26 NASB 95
“These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
John 14:15 NASB 95
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

2. What you do with the Words of Jesus dictates the stability of your life.

Luke 6:47–48 NASB 95
Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
Notice the emphasis on “dug deep”
Frost line
Psalm 119:11 NASB 95
Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.
John 4:14 NASB 95
but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”
Psalm 119:105 NASB 95
Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
When the storms come “foundation is already there”

3. What you do with the Words of Jesus reveals your ability to comprehend their impact on life.

Luke 6:49 NASB 95
But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”
A careless attitude in responsiveness to the Words of Jesus allows destruction in our lives.
Notice Jesus is not just emphasizing a recognition of His Word but an action of obedience to His Word.
