What is progress? Greatness?

As i finished prepping this morning I read a quote by C.S. Lewis

What age is someone “old”?

Now be careful if you answer out loud, which I do not recommend. :)

“Now I care far more how humanity lives than how long.” C.S. Lewis

Genesis 4 & 5 -the blessing is seen.

We see mankind doing exactly as the blessing would expect. Multiplication. Advancement. Progress. Even you may say greatness.

Yet, sin is still “master”.

We cannot miss this point. Part of the role of these genealogies, thought not primary role, is to map out the work of God in fulfilling the promise of Genesis 3.

No amount of advancement “cancels” worship.

The Genesis 4.26 reminds us that in the face of great advancement worship of God will still take place. God cannot be cancelled. This work means to identity oneself with God.

To call on the Lord means to identify with Him and His character.

It was meant as a way to say “I follow this guy!”

The faith of Enoch.

To some extent if we read chapters 4 and 5 together we are to feel “sad” for the 7th in the line. In fact, in the list of how old someone else Enoch was a life taken too soon.

Walking with God is deliberate.

This does not just happen, it was a deliberate decision on the part of Enoch.

Waling with God is counter-cultural.

Even in Enoch’s day this was not necessarily the norm nor the pattern.

Walking with God is about closeness of relationship.

Enoch did not just know about God but spent time with him.

God is faithful and calls us to be faithful.

His word is ringing true in these chapters.

Only Christ takes away the curse.

There was hope that Noah would undo what was happening but if you read the next couple chapters that is not the case. This is what we celebrate in Communion.
