7 By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
Lets back up and better set the stage.
BY FAITH NOAH…….
Definition of Faith:
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Effect of Faith
2 For by it the men of old gained approval.
Not obedience! They wouldn’t have gained approval by disobedience, but their obedience was the evidence of their faith.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
We are never told in the Genesis account that Noah had faith: What we are told is that:
8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
Noah Pleased God: Which means that Noah had faith in God.
9 These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God.
Last week we saw that Enoch walked with God….Now Noah.
Funeral
Yesterday, I preached the funeral of Popeye’s brother. I had never met him. All the information that I had came from the family; and as I thought about Eulogizing Dylan and this passage, I couldn’t help but wonder……At my funeral would the preacher stand up and say about me……Todd walked with God?
Will they say that about you?
NOT because what others say about you is important, but are you walking with God in such a way that it is evident to the world.
If you answer that question no, or sometimes, that should drive you directly back to the cross of Christ in repentance.
7 By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household…..
13 Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.
14 “Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch.
17 “Behold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish.
18 “But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.
Your faith impacts others
Your faith impacts others
Jesus healed a blind man in Luke 18.
Blind guy hear a crown and asked what was going on. They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. The blind guy yells out: “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
He was told sternly to stop yelling…..He kept crying all the more……
Jesus asks what do you want me to do for you?
The buy says he wants to see.
42 And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.”
43 Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him, glorifying God; and when all the people saw it, they gave praise to God.
It wasn’t that Noah’s faith covered his family, but that Noah’s faith would have impacted the faith of his family.
7 By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
by which he condemned the world…..
How many of you have the image in your head that God told Noah there would be a flood, Noah, while building the ark was warning people that the world would end and because the people didn’t listen to Noah, they were destroyed in the flood?
That’s not what the Word says….
Noah did preach
5 and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;
Matthew 24: 37-39
37 “For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.
38 “For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,
39 and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
The ark didn’t save Noah, it was by his faith he was saved.
Because of his faith he was warned by God.
Because of the lack of faith, the world didn’t receive God’s warning, presumably saw the actions of Noah.
Noah’s response to faith and in faith was identified as the act by which he condemned the world.
One commentary I read put it this way: Where faith is resisted or rejected it leads to condemnation.
The Ark
The Ark
Not a word we are used to… As a matter of fact, the only two things we use the english word ARK for are the Ark of the covenant and Noah’s Ark.
Ironically, In the original language, they are two different words. They are synonyms of each other. Meaning a container of sorts……
There are OT words meaning boat, ship, fleet, the inner most part of a ship….. ARK is not one of them.
The word used in the OT for ARK is only used for Noah’s ARK and the Basket that Moses was placed in a baby to save him from death at the hands of the Egyptians.
And the origin of that word means COFFIN.
Moses and Noah are both saved from death by entering the Grave. Consequently Noah and Moses are both pictures of What Christ’s salvation from eternal death by entering the grave.
50 to 75 years to build the ARK. Some scholars argue that it could have taken up to 120 years to build the Ark.
It’s possible that no one had seen rain on the earth before the flood.
God said it, Noah believed it and obeyed. FOR 50 to 120 years.
Christ is our ARK. He is the source of our Salvation and we will wait on that promise for 50 to 75 years after receiving it, depending on when we believed and how long we will live.
I say that to say, Noah’s faith wasn’t special….It was the object of Noah’s faith that is………
