Introduction:
Good Morning every one, it’s good to be able to come to worship this wonderful morning. Last week we talk about being a light within the world in Mt 5:14-16. we talk about Jesus compliment he gave his followers, and how to understand the compliment, we also talk about the second Challenge Christ gave to his followers and believers, and finally last week we talk about how to strive to be light with in our own community’s. This week we are continuing with the sermon on the mound this week we are looking at the longest segment of the sermon on the Mound today, which is Mt 5:17-48, we will not cover all of this passage today. we are actually looking at only two verse from this passage today. Lets turn in our Bibles to Mt 5:17-18
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
From these two verse here we are going to be looking at Fulfilling of the old law, The Covenant between God and the Jewish people, and what does this mean for us as Christians today?
Fulfilling the Old Law:
Fulfilling the Old Law:
One few problems that Christians still face, is that there is some who still believe that we are under the old law still to this day. the thing is that we are not Christ may not have come to abolish but came to fulfill the law. we see this in Mt 5:17
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
because of this teaching that we are under the old law, contradicts what Christ had his Apostle teach. we see that Paul talks about how Christ had abolishing in his flesh Let’s turn in our Bibles to Eph 2:14-16
14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.
From these three verse here in Eph, we see that Paul talks about how its because of Christ that everyone is able to come to God with confidence. its because of his death which is consider to be the ultimate sacrifice for mankind. we can also tie Col 2:14-17.
14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.
From this passage here in the letter to the early Church, we see that Paul is talking to how Christ fulfilled the the old testament prophecy’s by dying on the Cross for all of mankind. he abolish the old covenant that was only temporarily for God’s people. remember our theme verse when we started talking about the life of Christ John 14:6
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
without Christ we are unable to come to the throne of God, and we never know the being known as God without Christ.
The Covenant of God and the Jewish people:
The Covenant of God and the Jewish people:
From the history of the Bible we see that God when to the people first in the Old Testament, God talk with mankind and God had a personal relationship with People of Israel, which we see in 1st John 4:19
19 We love Him because He first loved us.
As Christians we see that God made covenant with the people of Israel. A covenant we come to understand a contract between God, and the Israelite people. Lets turn in our Bible to Deut 4:13
13 So He declared to you His covenant which He commanded you to perform, the Ten Commandments; and He wrote them on two tablets of stone.
From this verse here in Deuteronomy we see that Moses is telling the people of Israel the commandments of God, and how they are to uphold them. we can also Tie Deut 5:2-3
2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. 3 The Lord did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those who are here today, all of us who are alive.
Again we see that Moses is reminding the people that God made this contract between them, not with their fathers, or ancestors, but with them. now with all of this in mind we go back to Mt 5:17
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
lets look at this term here in this verse here known as Abolish, we come to understand that Abolish means to toss aside,to destroy, or to remove. Christ did not come to destroy or toss aside the law of Moses, Jesus Christ came to fulfill the law of Moses. Jesus Christ did this through his life, His death, and his resurrection. through Jesus Christ life we see that Jesus Christ fulfilled the prophecies, Jesus Christ kept the demands of of the Law, and accomplished the Law’s purpose. Let’s turn in out Bible to Gal 3:16-19
16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ. 17 And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. 18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
19 What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.
From this passage here in Gal, again we see that Paul is reminding the early Church about how Christ was promised by God, through the seed of Abraham, and through the Seed of David. We can also tie Gal 3:24-26
24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
From this we come to understand that Law was our tutor, it was to teach of the things to come, and Christ came from a Promise, and Christ fulfilled the promise of bring mankind back to God.
What does this mean for us as Christians:
What does this mean for us as Christians:
From everything that has happen in scripture, was to lead Jesus Christ to being the Savior of world, we as Christians see that Christ did not come to remove, to throw away, or to destroy the old law but to fulfill the old law. it is because of his death on the Cross we are able to have a relationship with God, and our sins forgiven. lets turn in our Bibles John 19:25-31
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
31 Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
From this passage here in the Gospel of John we come to understand that at the final points in Christ’s life he fulfilled the old Law, because in verse 30 we see his dying words. IT IS FINISH! Bring in a new covenant for all who believe and obey God. This all because of Christ were able to have a relationship with God, which we see back in John 14:6
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
It through Christ that we are able have this relationship, and this new covenant with God. Christ died for our sins, it is because of our sins that we need a mediator for us and God. Lets turn in our Bibles to Heb 9:14-16
13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
From this passage here in Hebrews we see that the author here really hits it home about how the blood sacrifices were purifying the flesh for the children of Israel, than presents this like a question to really think about here in verse 14 about how the Blood of Christ not only cleanse our bodies, but our spirit also. then if continue with verse 15 we see that Christ is are mediator he stand before God, tells God we are one of his adoptive children, because we are cover by the blood of Christ. Christ was the ultimate sacrifice for all of mankind. This was how God show how much he care by sending his son to died a cruel and shameful death for all. That is the reason why we come to worship God, and Christ every first day of the week. when we come together we come to remember that yes we all have sin against God in some way or form, but we come here to remember what Jesus Christ did which was to to fulfill the Old Law, and present a new covenant for all through his death, burial, and Resurrection. We come together to remember Christ and what he has done for us by dying for all.
Conclusion:
Conclusion:
I may not know what you struggle with in this life, but we have some who does. He came to this Earth to bring us all back to God the Father, by dying for our sins Lk 5:31-32
31 Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
It because of him that we are able to have a relationship with God. we now have choice to either to chose to live a life that pleasing to God, and Christ, or to seek out our own desires within the limits of this physical world. Once we make this choice we cannot be back in forth with God, and the world. being a Christians is a lifestyle, there are going to be hardship, there going to be times of sadness, and there are going times of joy and happiness also. it up to us to decide are we going to accept God, and Christ or are we going to reject God, and Christ, and accept the world. there is only one question i can ask today are you prepare? Because there going to be day when Christ does return, I may not know when that day will come but it could happen today, it could happen couple of weeks from now, or several years down the road or it could happen at any moment. if you are struggling or have question please come forward there men here would love to listen, help or offer prayers for you. If you wish to take the first step in to becoming adoptive child of God by being baptism please come forward, or if you are seeking a new church home please come forward as we stand and sing.
