Intro by explaining the weekend
We left off at the gospel, so where do we go from here?
Discipleship
Define disciple - student
Get this from:
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Making disciples sums up the only thing a christian is supposed to be doing
we live life, we take care of family, we obey Jesus, we go to church,
But all summed up in this command to make disciples
Start by reading v37-39
Luke 6:37–39 ESV
37 “Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” 39 He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?
Explain Context - starts out in strange place to discuss the word discipleship
Thats because there is no difference between the daily life of a christian and this process of discipleship
We ended the weekend on the story of the gospel
period.
The very next thing we look at is
The gospel should effect your life in some major ways
including how you treat yourself and others
So as we unpack this passage - i want to look at 4 important reflections of this passage

The crop from discipleship - v39-40

Luke 6:39–40 ESV
39 He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.
Assumption is that in a place that like, crops and harvest effect your life in some way?
My son is a lot like me.
He’s not just my son he’s my disciple.
for better or worse, very intentional
That’s the way this thing tends to work.
The fruit of your work is your disciples.
Everyone teaches someone something
But not all christians make christian disciples
cold hard look at the disciples we have made
Illustration:
We all multiple in someway.
bread, cooking, guns, iron work, farming,
all great and important things
What is the most significant thing you have taught someone?
What does those under your authority or influence say about your walk with Jesus?

The Call of discipleship - v41-42

Luke 6:41–42 ESV
41 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.
The call is two parts:
If you follow Jesus, your life begins to unfold like this
Obey Christ
My log
Show others the way
Their speck
Its unloving to be self-righteous
It’s unloving to not say something.

The command for discipleship - v46

Luke 6:46 ESV
46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?

What has Jesus told us in the Gospels?

Obey

John 15:14 ESV
14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.
The theme of john and 1 john

Suffer

1 Peter 2:21 ESV
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
John 15:20 ESV
20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
John 16:33 ESV
33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Multiply

Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
This is the call to follow Jesus.
For ALL CHRISTIANS

The crumble from no discipleship -v47-49

Luke 6:47–49 ESV
47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
What happens when an individual does not obey.
What happens when a church does not obey.
Not sure about here, but
Statistics for Pontotoc County say it gets bad when christians aren’t being faithful to Jesus
Same for Marshall County where I am from.
What does a good foundation look like?
People get in God’s word, for themselves.
Small groups flourish (accountability and study to apply God’s word)
Outreach happens
Missions happen.
