How do we decide how much we are worth?

Luke 12:6–7 CSB

6 Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. 7 Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Jesus tells a story about sparrows to a big crowd of people, because He wanted them to know how valuable they were in the eyes of God.

Sparrows were the least of all birds.

One penny could get you two sparrows, and two pennies could buy you five.

They were so insignificant that the trader threw in the fifth one for free.

Many of those listening to Jesus that day felt like they were the fifth sparrow

That they were not good enough, not worth much, and/or were expendable.

But Jesus saw them quite differently.

To God, the fifth sparrow was a valuable as the other 4.

It was even as valuable one of the more acceptable birds.

He wanted them to understand that He knew every detail about them, even the number of hairs on their heads.

And that they truly mattered to Him.

We all feel like the fifth sparrow sometimes,

but it’s important for us to understand that it’s only the world who whispers that devaluing lie.

Christ valued even that last sparrow, but He values us much more.

To Christ, we are significant.

Listen to what Peter says in 1 Peter 5.

1 Peter 5:6–7 CSB

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.

The humility Peter is talking about isn’t “think of yourself as unimportant”, it is “think of God as a whole lot bigger than you.”

He is so much bigger than you and so much bigger than the people around you who you are trying to prove yourself worthy to.

And because He is bigger (the bible word is glorious), Peter tells us to cast our cares on Him.

BECAUSE HE CARES FOR US.

If you feel like a fifth sparrow today and fear that you don’t matter, take courage and know that it’s not true.

You do matter.

You matter to the Creator of the Universe!

If He knows every hair on your head, whether many or few, He surely cares about your life today.
