Mentorship Lesson: Focused Faithfulness – Staying on Mission
Objective: Help a zealous pastor recognize the importance of focus without directly stating they are unfocused, guiding them to prioritize their current duties for long-term impact.
Opening (2 Minutes) – Story & Scripture
Illustration:
“Imagine a firefighter so eager to save lives that he runs into a burning building without his gear—he has passion, but his lack of preparation will cost him. Ministry can feel the same way. Passion without focus can lead to burnout, missed opportunities, and unfinished work.”
Scripture Focus:
Luke 10:41-42– “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary.”
Luke 10:41–42 KJV 1900
And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Ask: What do you think Jesus meant by ‘one thing is necessary’ in ministry?
Main Teaching (5 Minutes) – Focused Faithfulness
1. Passion is a Gift, But Without Focus, It Can Be a Distraction
• Zeal for ministry is powerful, but it needs to be directed.
• Example: Paul’s passion before and after conversion—he went from persecuting the church to planting churches (Acts 9).
2. Faithfulness to Today Prepares You for Tomorrow
1 Corinthians 4:2 – “Moreover, it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.”
1 Corinthians 4:2 KJV 1900
Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
• Ask: What if God’s biggest work in your life is happening right where you are?
3. Busyness Does Not Equal Effectiveness
• Jesus never rushed, but He always fulfilled His purpose (John 17:4).
John 17:4 KJV 1900
I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
• Ministry impact is not measured by activity but by obedience.
• Ask: Are you doing what God has called you to do today, or just trying to do everything?
Application & Challenge (3 Minutes)
1. Identify Your Primary Calling Today
• What are the top three God-given responsibilities you need to focus on this week?
• What distractions need to be removed?
2. Create a “Stop Doing” List
• Write down things that consume energy but do not align with your main calling.
3. Set One Daily Priority
• Start each day by asking: What is the most important ministry task I must complete today?
Closing Question:
“If you could only accomplish one ministry task today that would truly move the mission forward, what would it be?”
Encourage them to write it down and commit to doing it!
