LOOK BEHOLD, THE MAN CLOTHED IN LIGHTING: LUKE 9:28-43

2 Corinthians 3:16–18 NASB95

but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

Luke 9:28–36 NASB95

Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming. And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not realizing what he was saying. While he was saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!” And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.

Historical context

Luke is wanting us to see Jesus as greater than Moses:

But there is more to this story, Luke is also showing us that Jesus is the very one who spoke to Moses on the Mountain and the one who spoke to Elijah.

Moses

Exodus 19:18–20 NASB95

Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the Lord descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently. When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him with thunder. The Lord came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

Exodus 20:1–4 NASB95

Then God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.

Elijah

1 Kings 19:11–13 NASB95

So He said, “Go forth and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

NOT SURE IF YOU HAVE CAUGHT IT BUT LUKE IS SHOWING US ONE OF THE COOLEST THINGS YOU CAN IMAGINE.

Time is bending - You are seeing The Word of God in Jesus give the 10 commandments

You are seeing the Word of God in Jesus give direction to Elijah.

You are seeing the past and the present happening at one time.

The Majesty and Glory James, Peter and John must have seen and experienced. 

They are seeing the man Jesus, clothed in lightening and there standing with two men who are clothed in glory, Moses and Elijah.

MY GOAL TODAY IS TO CAPTURE YOUR HEART WITH THE WORD OF GOD, STIR IN YOU A PASSION TO BEHOLD THE GLORY OF JESUS.

What do I mean by beholding the glory of God.

I am not talking about a mystical expereince or altered states on consciousness - though that can happen.

I am talking about our minds, heart and soul being fully open for God to reveal to us the glory, majesty, and wonder of Jesus.

A revelation of who He is but in a deeply personal way as if God was revealing Jesus personally to you.

Lets Behold The Man Clothed in Lightning

BEHOLD THE GIVER AND REVELATION OF THE LAW AND PROPHETS.

JESUS WAS THE GIVER AND IS THE FULFILLMENT OF THE LAW

He is the one who spoke the Law to Moses (Word of God)

He is also the one whom the law of God points to (Ritual laws all point to Jesus)

JESUS IS THE ONE WHO INSPIRED AND SPOKE TO THE ANCIENT PROPHETS - (JESUS IS THE WORD OF GOD MADE FLESH)

NOT ONLY DID JESUS SPEAK TO MOSES BUT IT WAS JESUS WHO SPOKE TO ELIJAH.

BEHOLD THE CHAOS SLAYER

Luke 9:37–42 NASB95

On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only boy, and a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at the mouth; and only with difficulty does it leave him, mauling him as it leaves. “I begged Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not.” And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” While he was still approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy and gave him back to his father.

JESUS NOT ONLY IS THE FULFILLMENT OF THE ANCIENT PROPHETS AND THE LAW BUT HE IS ALSO THE CHAOS DRAGON SLAYER.

1 John 3:8 NASB95

the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.

IN GEN 1 - IT IS THE WORD OF GOD WHO SUBDUES THE CHAOS AND BRINGS ORDER AND FORM TO CREATION.

IT IS THE WORD OF GOD MADE FLESH, JESUS WHO DELIVERS US FROM THE CHAOS DRAGON AND BRINGS ORDER TO OUR LIVES.

Killed the dragon through - Life, death, resurrection.

The great exchange - my unrighteousness for his righteousness.

He willingly allowed the dragon to slay swallow Him / Then he ripped the dragon in half and life came out and conquered death.

TWO REASONS GOD REVEALS THE TRUE GLORY OF JESUS TO US.

First, the transform us into His image.

2 Corinthians 3:18 NASB95

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

Second, to heal and bring order to a chaotic world through you and I.

John 14:12 NASB95

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.

Matthew 28:18–20 NASB95

And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

CONCLUSION

We often treat the Glory of God, the Mountain Top Expereinces with God like John, James, and Peter.

We try to cage the expereince of God in our little space, with our little traditions and forms.

We try to lock God down so we can have expereinces!

The Church can become like a Zoo

Caged lion for our own entertainment.

But what would happen if we released the lion from our cages and followed after Him into the streets our city, community, neighborhood, home?

CHAOS WOULD RUN IN FEAR OF THE LION OF JUDAH!

DEMONS WOULD FLEE IN FEAR OF THE LION OF JUDAH.

THIS IS WHO JESUS IS- HE IS THE FEARSOME LION OF JUDAH

HE IS GOD IN THE FLESH - THE CHAOS SLAYER

HE IS THE WORDS THAT SPLIT THE RED SEA, THAT BROUGHT LIGHT

THAT SPOKE THE LAW TO MOSES IN FIRE AND WIHISPERED TO ELIJAH.

HE IS GOD INCARNATE - HE IS THE STAR BREATHING, DEMON DESTROYING, DEATH CONCURING, LIFE GIVING, NEW HEAVEN CREATING, ETERNAL SALVATION GIVING GOD!

———————————————— IT IS THIS JESUS, THAT WHEN WE REALLY SEE HIM, WHEN GOD REVEALS HIM TO OUR VERY SPIRIT THAT WE BEGIN TO BE CHANGED INTO HIS IMAGE.

AND IT IS THIS JESUS WHO NOT ONLY SLAYED THE CHAOS DRAGON BUT CALLS US TO BE HIS BODY IN THIS WORLD

THE BODY CALLED DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN TOPS TO GO INTO THE WORLD WITH HEALING, DELIVERANCE, POWER OF JESUS.

TO CALL TO THOSE STILL BOUND BY THE DEFEATED DRAGON

BEHOLD THE MAN CLOTHED IN LIGHTING, JESUS OUR GOD HAS DEFEATED THE gods of this world, He has slayed the chaos dragon, and you can be free in Him!
