Sermon Outline: "You Are the Salt of the Earth"
Text: Matthew 5:13
Introduction:
Jesus calls His followers the "salt of the earth," signifying our essential role in the world.
In biblical times, salt had great value and multiple uses, making this analogy rich with meaning.
Today, we will explore three key aspects of being the salt of the earth and how we can live it out in our daily lives.
1. Salt Preserves – The Call to Moral Influence
1. Salt Preserves – The Call to Moral Influence
In ancient times, salt was used to preserve food, preventing decay.
As believers, we are called to preserve righteousness and truth in a world that is morally decaying (Philippians 2:15).
Philippians 2:15 “15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky”
Example: Noah - righteous remnant
This means standing firm in our faith, living with integrity, and being a godly influence in our families, workplaces, and communities.
2. Salt Enhances – The Call to Christlike Living
2. Salt Enhances – The Call to Christlike Living
Salt brings out the flavor in food, making it more enjoyable.
As Christians, our lives should enhance the world by reflecting the love, joy, and truth of Christ (Colossians 4:6).
Colossians 4:6 “6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”
Our speech and actions should draw people to Jesus, making Christianity attractive rather than repelling.
3. Salt Can Lose Its Saltiness – The Danger of Spiritual Compromise - No Molecular Stability
3. Salt Can Lose Its Saltiness – The Danger of Spiritual Compromise - No Molecular Stability
Jesus warns that if salt loses its saltiness, it is no longer useful.
We can lose our effectiveness through compromise, sin, or failing to engage with the world as Christ intended (Romans 12:2).
We must remain spiritually strong through prayer, the Word, and accountability in the body of Christ.
Action: Salt is meant to be spread! It is meant to be dispersed
Action: Salt is meant to be spread! It is meant to be dispersed
How many of y’all show up to places that are bland? That are in need of preserving or enhancing?
Did you know that you are essential?
If you don’t show up, people will notice!
You are the light of the World - Identity Statement
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Deeds are meant to glorify God not self.

Discuss:
1. When you hear the phrases “salt of the earth” and “light of the world,” what comes to
mind? How has someone positively influenced (been salt and light) your life?
2. Where do you see darkness or blandness in the world you feel called to impact?
