Peters Statement

After Jesus told the rich young ruler to sell all he had and give to the poor
Peter says we have left all to follow you.
Implying that they did the thing that Jesus told the rich young ruler
Jesus now is taking the disciples aside and telling them
what Jesus is going to do for them
the disciples left all
Jesus will give all
Read Luke 18 31-34.

The Road To Emmaus

The disciples were being told by Jesus what will happen to Him in Jerusalem
V 31
V 34 their minds would not conceive such a thing to happen
because the messiah is to be king and rule the world
Lets listen in on the 2 walking home to Emmaus in Luke 24 13-
V 21
in our minds this is what was supposed to happen
_V25-26
they should have known because the prophets had prophesied about Jesus and what happened to Him
V 27
Jesus gave them all the prophecies about Himself
how the Father had planned for the crucifixion of Jesus, God the son
-V 35
can you put yourself in their shoes walking along with Jesus
He is opening up the scriptures to you speaking of Himself
how He needed to die for you to redeem you from sin and it’s penalty
how their heats burned
as they were hanging on to every word of Jesus
the Joy in their hearts as they ran back to Jerusalem with the good news
singing Up from the grave He arose
BUT we are getting ahead of ourselves
Lets go back to Luke 18 31.
and look at the

Prophesies

Zechariah 9:9 LSB
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Make a loud shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is righteous and endowed with salvation, Lowly and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a pack animal.
the triumphal entry into Jerusalem
the date of this prophecy being fulfilled was from Daniel
Daniel 9:25–26 LSB
“So you are to know and have insight that from the going out of a word to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be restored and rebuilt, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress. “Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are decreed.
483 years from the time they started rebuilding the temple in the book of Nehemiah
The outcast priests called the Essenes at the time of Jesus had this all figured out
they were waiting for the crucifixion of the Messiah
Psalm 41:9 LSB
Even my close friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.
the betrayal of Judas
turn to Psalm 22 1-18
Turn to Isaiah 53.
Psalm 16:10 LSB
For You will not forsake my soul to Sheol; You will not give Your Holy One over to see corruption.
death and resurrection
Turn to Psalm 24
the ascention back to the Father
This is part of what Jesus taught the 2 on the road to Emmaus
this is what happens sometimes when we read the word of God
we come across something that does not fit into the narrative that we have in our minds
thus we dismiss it
the narrative the men of Israel had is
the Messiah will come and be king and rule with them forever in the kingdom
everything about a suffering servant was not applied to the Messiah
even today in Judaism the suffering servant is applied to the nation of Israel suffering not the Messiah
V 32-33
all of the suffering Jesus is telling them he will endure
they do not comprehend , Jesus might as well be speaking english to them
we see this in
V 34
a lot of these things the disciples really did not understand until Pentecost
when the Holy Spirit came on them and taught
Paul preaching this sermon in acts look at all of the prophesies he mentions in his sermon
turn to Acts 13 21-41.
The Holy Spirit taught the disciples
He also teaches us
prophecies are given to us to know God’s plan for His creation
when we read something that does not fit into our narrative
then we need to ask the teacher
to make it clear to us
don’t just dismiss because it does not fit
