Hebrews 11:1–6 KJV 1900

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. 4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. 5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Lesson Abstract: This lesson is designed to provide clear truths about the existence of God based upon reason, revelation, and reality from our relationship with Him.

I. The Existence of God Established by Reason

A. The Construct of Universal Belief (Priori)

Romans 1:19–20 “19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:”

B. The Construct from Cause and Effect (Cosmological)

Reveals Intelligence - Man is intelligent, therefore his Cause must also be intelligent. Creation is orderly.

1 Corinthians 14:33 “33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”

Reveals Personality - Man has personality, therefore his Cause could not have been impersonal. (Otherwise it would be like a hospital making humans.)

Reveals Power — We see great power in many aspects of creation. That Power must have had a Cause that is powerful, since energy comes form an energizer.

C. The Construct from Design (Teleological)

Psalm 139:14 “14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Marvellous are thy works; And that my soul knoweth right well.”

D. The Constuct from Life

1 John 1:3–4 “3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.”

E. The Construct from Being (Ontological)

Psalm 19:1–2 “1 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament sheweth his handywork. 2 Day unto day uttereth speech, And night unto night sheweth knowledge.”

F. The Construct From Morality (Anthropological)

Romans 2:15 “15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)”

G. The Construct from Congruity

Ecclesiastes 3:11 “11 He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.”

H. The Construct from History

Psalm 75:6–7 “6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, Nor from the west, nor from the south. 7 But God is the judge: He putteth down one, and setteth up another.”

Psalm 37:10–13 “10 For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: Yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. 11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. 12 The wicked plotteth against the just, And gnasheth upon him with his teeth. 13 The Lord shall laugh at him: For he seeth that his day is coming.”

II. The Existence of God Developed by Revelation

Hebrews 11:6 “6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

Romans 1:18–20 “18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:”

III. The Existence of God Confirmed by Reality (Experience)

Psalm 19:9–10 “9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”
