Introduction
Most of the crowd that came together to behold the crucifixion of Jesus was in a condition of hatred. They had hounded the Saviour as dogs would a deer. All mad with rage, they hemmed Him in for death. It must have been hideous to the last degree to have seen so many grinning faces and mocking eyes, and to have heard so many cruel words and scornful shouts. The spectacle was too detestable to be long endured of heaven. Suddenly, the sun shocked at the scene, veiled it’s face, and for three long hours the mob sat shivering in midday midnight. Meanwhile the earth trembled beneath their feet, the rocks were rent, and the temple, with all it’s holy atmosphere, had it’s holy veil ripped apart as though by strong, invisible hands.
The darkness, and the earth tremor, caused a change of feelings. There was no more words of mockery, no more smart remarks and hissing. In this account of Calvary we can see and understand how God can tame the wildest. There are times in our own lives that we get off course. We have moments of anger, of heartbreak, of discouragement, of disillusionment, of depression, of pride, of selfishness, and even quitting on every single person and situation. It is at this point in our lives we need a fresh look at Calvary. A fresh look at Calvary will definitely change our view and give a new perspective that will strengthen us to continue the journey.
Allow me first of all to point out some things that took place at “That Sight!”
Authority Repenting: v.47
Accusers Returning: v.48
Acquaintances Reasoning: v.49
Let us take a look for ourselves at “That Sight!” As we put ourselves at the foot of the cross; we see in the center, between two thieves, the Son of God made flesh, nailed by His hands and feet, dying in anguish for all of us, which words cannot portray. We too would beat upon our breasts. Let us consider four things as we, by faith, cast our eyes upon “That Sight!”
The Sight Which Silenced My Adversary:
Colossians 2:14–15 “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”
2. The Sight Which Secured My Salvation:
1 Corinthians 1:17–18 “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”
3. The Sight Which Sealed My Position:
Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
4. The Sight Which Sustained My Hope:
Titus 2:13 “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;”
Conclusion
Conclusion
John 19:30 “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
Salvation is a finished work. Is there something in your life you’re holding onto? Maybe you need to release this? Don’t look at yourself, take a look at Calvary and consider what Christ has done for you and the freedom that awaiting!
